Michigan State at Ohio State Preview

The Ohio State Buckeyes have two games remaining before their Nov. 25 showdown with Michigan at the Big House. The first of those two games will be played at home this weekend against Michigan State.

It has been a pretty forgettable year for the Spartans, who are 3-6 this season and tied with Indiana for last place in the Big Ten East.

Noah Kim started the season as the Spartans’ No. 1 quarterback, but he was benched after Week 5. By the time MSU gave up on him as its starter, Kim had thrown six picks in three games, including three interceptions in his final start against Iowa. His replacement, redshirt freshman Katin Houser, will make his fifth start this weekend on the road at Ohio Stadium.

Houser has shown flashes of talent and, in fairness to him, he has done the best he can despite subpar coaching and a dreadful offensive line. However, he has only thrown three touchdown passes in four starts so far, which is nowhere near what his team will need to keep up with the Buckeyes this weekend.

The 31.5-point spread favors the Buckeyes to register a blowout, and this could be a chance for the home team to showcase its talent and generate some additional highlight film for NFL scouts. The Buckeyes are such heavy favorites that there is currently no moneyline option for them in this game, and having the game’s over/under total set at 47.5 suggests to me that the oddsmakers don’t expect Michigan State to score many points.

The last time the Spartans faced a top team, they were shut out by Michigan in a 49-0 slaughtering on Oct. 21. A similar outcome seems very plausible in this one, since this game could get away from the visitors in a hurry.

Michigan State is one of college football’s bottom-five teams when it comes to scoring this season. The Spartans average just 14.9 points per game -- way down from their 24.4-point average in 2022.

Prior to last weekend, MSU had dropped six straight games, including losses to Minnesota, Rutgers, Maryland, and Iowa. The Spartans’ 28-17 win over Nebraska last weekend gave them some much needed confidence, but we’re still talking about an offense that managed just 63 rushing yards in that game.

Throwing the football against this Buckeyes defense will be very difficult, and Houser is going to be in for a long night. The Buckeyes rank in the nation’s top three in passing yards allowed, allowing fewer than 160 per game.

I believe we will see one of Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord’s better performances on Saturday, as the quarterback seizes an opportunity to get the crowd going in a night game at home.

McCord has been playing well this year, but he has thrown three interceptions over his last two games. Quickly addressing and rectifying these mistakes should be a priority before Ohio State before has to face Michigan in two weeks. McCord needs to demonstrate both resilience and improvement this weekend.

Buckeyes wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. should surpass 1,000 receiving yards for the season on Saturday, although he had a quiet day against Rutgers in last weekend’s 35-16 win. After breaking the 100-yard mark in four straight games, Harrison had just four catches for 25 yards against Rutgers. He did manage to catch two touchdown passes, but his critics chimed in after the game to question his status as the best wide receiver in college football.

Harrison will have a shot at redemption this weekend, and he now has fellow receiver Emeka Egbuka back to support him after Egbuka missed nearly a month due to injury. Egbuka returned to the lineup for the Rutgers game, bringing the Buckeyes back to full strength on offense as they head down the stretch.

Michigan State vs. Ohio State Predictions and Pick

There is almost no doubt that Ohio State will win this game, but have the Buckeyes been consistent enough in recent weeks to cover such a heavy spread?

OSU has gone into its last two games as a 14.5-point favorite against Wisconsin and a 19-point favorite against Rutgers. The Buckeyes didn’t cover the spread in either game, and they have only scored more than 40 points once in their last six games.

In fact, the only example of the Buckeyes winning by a margin like this in 2023 is the Oct. 14 Purdue game, which Ohio State won 41-7. I just don’t have the confidence that the Buckeyes can win like that consistently, and this is not the sort of team that’s scoring 50-plus points per game.

I think the Buckeyes win here, but if Michigan State can score even 10 points, I don’t see OSU covering this spread.

Ohio State will be looking to make a statement at home, but I haven’t seen Kyle McCord go out and throw five touchdowns against a weaker team yet. Therefore, I’ll take the points with Michigan State.

The Pick: Michigan State +31.5 (-110)

With that same thought process in mind, I believe I have to go for the under-points total here. I envision this game’s scoreline ending up something like 35-7 or 30-10. Michigan State isn’t expected to score much, and the Buckeyes tend to land in a range somewhere between 30 and 35 points.

Barring a complete blowout that would enable the Buckeyes to prove me wrong on both counts with a 55-point performance, I think this will be a less explosive game than the one many people expect to see at Ohio Stadium on Saturday night.
