NBA Player Prop Bets Today for Wednesday, December 27, 2023

The NBA is a strange place. A couple seasons ago, Andre Drummond was about the best you could get as a center, a mammoth man who led the league in rebounding four times for the Pistons and Cavs and played for Team USA before falling off the face of the earth, so to speak.

Last night, due to a groin injury to Nikola Vucevic, he started for the Chicago Bulls and turned back time with 24 points and 25 rebounds as Chicago defeated Atlanta while playing again without Zach LaVine. You couldn’t help but wonder whether he was being showcased by a team eager to make a trade.

So it goes on a night-by-night basis in the NBA. We are not dealing with as much load management as we did a year ago, but there are other unexpected events, such as Victor Wembanyama spraining his ankle by stepping on a ballboy’s foot.

Navigating the unexpected is part of the challenge of the gambling game, and wagering trends will only get you so far. If you can see a Drummond coming and place the proper wager, the biggest problem in your life will be writing a check to the IRS to pay them their share of your gambling winnings.

With that in mind and estimated taxes due in four days, let’s look for four player prop picks that make sense when so much is senseless in our world.

Best Sixers vs Magic Player Prop Bets

Franz Wagner Triple-Double

The big German kid went for 28 points, nine assists and eight rebounds last night at Washington, and tonight he can go to the bucket and not have to worry about having his shot blocked by Joel Embiid, who is out. Orlando is 18-11 and could use a quality win against a quality team, which Philadelphia is even without Embiid. So there is a motivation factor at play here, and chances are the Sixers are going to have to pick their poison regarding who they concentrate on defending along the Magic front line. The Magic have Wagner, Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter starting, and Goga Bitadze coming off the bench. Wagner is only +350 to record a double-double, so why not take a chance that he gets one additional assist and two additional rebounds and makes this very enticing triple-double line hit.

The Pick: Franz Wagner to triple-double (+2800)

Best New York vs. Oklahoma City Player Prop Bets

Jalen Brunson 10+ assists

The Knicks point guard is coming off one of his best games of the season in a Christmas Day victory over the Boston Celtics when he was being checked by Jrue Holiday. Tonight he is going against an even better defender in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who collects blocks and steals like 10-year-olds collect baseball cards. This is going to result, we believe, in Brunson looking to pass a little more than usual, and he is still without a double-figure assist game this season after recording seven of them last season. So, he is due, and you can rest assured that coach Tom Thibodeau will have the Knicks ready for a second straight strong game against a powerhouse team. After defeating Minnesota last night, we can consider the Thunder a powerhouse team. Brunson merely needs his teammates to connect off his passes. He is usually a shoot-first point guard, but he can diversify his game.

The Pick: Jalen Brunson to record at least 10 assists (+600)

Best Milwaukee vs Brooklyn Player Prop Bet

Mikal Bridges 30+ points

Rarely do you want to wager on a player in a slump, but Bridges has been working his way out of one, scoring 29 two games ago and 21 in the most recent game against Detroit, a number that could have been 27 if he had not missed six free throws. Bridges has not gone for 30 since Dec. 6, but he went for 42 on Dec. 2 and had 31 against the Bucks the last time these teams met on Nov. 6. He had a dozen 30-point games last season after being acquired from Phoenix, and one of them was against the Bucks. If Khris Middleton is defending him again, 30 is a distinct possibility. The Nets, who we feel are sneaky good, need him to be a better No. 1 scoring option than Cam Thomas. Look for coach Jacque Vaughn to try to make that happen tonight.

The Pick: Mikal Bridges to score 30 or more points (+450)

Best Toronto at Washington Player Prop

Daniel Gafford Double-double

One of the few bright spots on a moribund Wizards team, Gafford was acquired from Chicago three years ago in one of the better trades former general manager Tommy Sheppard made before being let go. Gafford can be prone to having ill-timed off nights, but he went for 13 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks last night against Orlando. It was his fifth double-double of the season and the latest strong game in a month of December that has seen him shoot nearly 70 percent and block 2.6 shots per game. He is probably a keeper on a team that is looking to make moves, with Kyle Kuzma likely the first player out the door. He had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks the last time these teams met on Nov. 13, and it is not all that much of a reach to think he can get that extra rebound tonight.

The Pick: Daniel Gafford to record a double-double (+250)
