OK, so that was another crazy day in The Association, both on and off the court. The Bucks fired coach Adrian Griffin. The Heat traded for Terry Rozier. Tristan Thompson drew a 25-game suspension, and coach Chauncey Billups of Portland was the latest person victimized by an increasingly inept refereeing corps.

Should be a tough day at NBA headquarters as everyone who works there tries to navigate Commissioner Adam Silver’s rage. It has been more than a month since his beloved NBA Cup concluded in Las Vegas, and negative stories are once again outweighing positive stories.

Silver likes NBA coverage to be superficial, but he has a bunch of outraged coaches and players making more and more noise about the refereeing. He has a rare appeal to sort through after Billups was denied a timeout late against the Thunder after the Blazers showed up and made a game of it against a team that had crushed them in their two earlier meetings.

We have eight games on the schedule tonight, including the four worst teams: Detroit (4 wins), Charlotte (10 wins), Washington (7 wins) and San Antonio (8 wins). There is no ESPN doubleheader tonight because Suns-Mavs is on ABC and Thunder-Spurs is on ESPN a half-four later. Insert your own Disney Corp. joke here.

What makes sense when looking at player props? Can we find a diamond in the rough at a nice price since nobody aside from the triple-double guys and Joel Embiid is consistent? Let’s give it a whirl. (We will address the big-time Dallas-Phoenix game in a separate article)

NBA Player Props Tonight for Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

Karl Anthony Towns 35+ points (+850)

Washington has lost four in a row and 10 of 11. In the Wizards last game, Nikola Jokic dropped 42 on center Daniel Gafford, who will have his hands full tonight with both Rudy Gobert and KAT. This is what makes the Wolves’ two-headed monster at center such a tough matchup problem. We are going with Towns to score at least 35 for a couple of reasons: He took 15 3-pointers against Charlotte and made 10 of them, and he is widely considered the best outside shooting big man in the NBA. He also does not get the credit that Anthony Edwards does for being a team leader, even though Towns has much more experience. When a guy is coming off a 62-point night, you ride him.

The Pick: Karl Anthony Towns to score at least 35 points (+850)

Jaren Jackson Jr. 2+ steals (+150)

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year had six steals last time out against Toronto. He had four steals four games earlier against the Warriors, and three earlier this month against San Antonio. In Miami’s last game, an ugly loss to the Magic, they had 14 turnovers and just 30 buckets. The Heat are getting nothing of consistency from anyone other than Bam Adebayo, and it is uncertain whether they will have Terry Rozier available after he was acquired yesterday. This is truly an anything-can-happen game between two teams that have not come close to meeting expectations, and Jackson coming through on the defensive end is one quantity that the Grizzlies have always been able to rely upon since he arrived.

The Pick: Jaren Jackson Jr. to have at least 2 steals (+150)

Alperen Şengün to triple-double (+1800)

We should have all grown accustomed to seeing European centers post triple doubles after what we have seen from Nikola Jokic and Domantas Sabonis over the past few seasons. The young Turk finally got his first one last time out with 24 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds against the Celtics in a game that also featured a triple double from Jaylen Brown. The 21-year-old had come within two rebounds once before, and the key stat for him will be assists. His team is playing a Portland team on the second night of a back-to-back after a crushing loss to the Thunder that is under appeal because of Chauncey Billups’ ejection, and their heads may not be in this one. That makes things easier for Şengün.

The Pick: Alperen Şengün to record a triple-double (+1800)

Dejounte Murray to triple-double (+1400)

When the Hawks acquired Murray from San Antonio, they were acquiring a player who had posted 12 triple-doubles in 2021-22 for the Spurs. He had only one last season and he has none this season. He could break through tonight if he can get his assists into double figures, which will be tricky with Young and Hunter out. The key will be feeding Clint Capela and Saddiq Bey against Golden State’s undersized front line. At these odds we feel this well-overdue wager is nicely priced. The guy does want to drive up his value to get to a preferred destination.

The Pick: Dejounte Murray to triple-double (+1400)
