We are entering the pre-Christmas home stretch in the NBA, and the holiday pressure is impacting some more than others. Certainly it is doing nothing bad to the Los Angeles Clippers, who have won nine in a row and may end up becoming the team to beat in the West. Their title odds are down from +3000 to +1200.

Who would have predicted that (or wagered on that) when things started so poorly after Harden was acquired from the Sixers.

And speaking of the Sixers, Joel Embiid dropped 51 points on the West-leading Timberwolves last night to increase his lead in the league scoring race. He is now averaging 35.1 points, the highest average of his career by two full points. He is the +350 second choice on the Betway board for MVP, and it may come down to a two-man race between him and Nikola Jokic.

The NBA schedule does not slow down on this particular Thursday night, with a slate of eight games involving 16 teams, half of which are on the second half of back-to-backs. There was a lot of overnight travel as none of those teams (with the exception of Cleveland and Chicago) on back-to-backs are playing in the same city, so travel fatigue will be a factor tonight. We will factor that in as necessary.

NBA Player Props Today – Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023

Best Spurs vs Bulls Player Prop Bets

Keldon Johnson double-double (+390)

Johnson is coming off a double-double in a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks as Victor Wembanyama was a late scratch due to a sore right ankle. With Wembanyama possibly missing another game we have to look for someone who will fill up the stat sheet in his place. Johnson went for 28 points and 12 rebounds with a team-high 35 minutes two nights ago against the Bucks, his second double-double of the month and his sixth this season. He is the longest-tenured member of the Spurs and their locker room leader, and this is a nice price on a player who will likely be asked to do more than usual given Wembanyama’s uncertain status.

The Pick: Keldon Johnson to record a double-double (+390).

Best Pacers vs. Grizzlies Player Prop Bets

Ja Morant 50+ Points + Assists + Rebounds (+575)

This may be the best pure point guard matchup of the season as Tyrese Haliburton of the Pacers and Ja Morant of the Grizzlies go after each other. Morant is coming off a thrilling game-ending bucket in a nationally televised victory over New Orleans two nights ago in his return from a 25-game suspension. Morant had a line of 34 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and add those number up and you reach 48. And he did that in 35 minutes. If coach Taylor Jenkins lets him go a little bit longer as he plays in front of the home crowd at FexEx Forum, he can get an extra bucket, an extra assist and an extra rebound and make this stat total prop bet hit. The oddsmakers have not had him on the board for quite some time, so we shall assume they are rusty when it comes to Morant.

The Pick: Ja Morant to have at least 50 points, rebounds and assists combined (+575)

Best Bucks vs. Magic Player Prop Bets

Paolo Banchero double-double (+290)

Banchero is coming off his worst game of the season, a 2-for-12 shooting night against Miami in which he finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists – pretty darn close to a triple-double. We do not yet know if he will be playing against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks, as he is listed as questionable due to a mid-foot strain. His status will impact not only the point spread but also Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley’s game-planning. If Antetokounmpo is not defending Banchero, a whole lot of the offense will flow through the power forward position. That could lead to a triple-double (+3500) for last season’s Rookie of the Year, but we will err on the side of caution and look for his fifth double-double of the month.

The Pick: Paolo Banchero to record a double-double (+290).

Best Wizards at Trail Blazers Player Prop

Tyus Jones double-double (+400)

Here we have a point guard who had a triple-double three games ago, a double-double two games ago and finished one assist shy of another double-double two nights ago at Sacramento. There is nothing quite as off-the-radar as a Wizards road game on the West Coast, and this is a meeting of two very bad teams – Washington is 4-22 and Portland is 7-21, with tickets available as low as $7. Jones has been one of the few bright spots for the Wizards as the most news they have made this season is planning a move to northern Virginia. The kid is playing for a contract or for a trade to a contender before the deadline in February. So, he has a vested financial interest in putting up consistently good lines, and +400 on him doing something for the third time in four games is a line we like.

The Pick: Tyus Jones to record a double-double. (+400).
