Not only that, but Giannis Antetokounmpo has been bagging on everyone in the organization down to the equipment manager. Talk of Darvin Ham’s job security has quieted down with two straight wins after being an open topic in Lakerland as they lost four in a row.

Oklahoma City, Dallas and New York are also playing, although the Mavs will be without Luka Doncic again, increasing the chances that the Knicks run their winning streak to six in a row. The Thunder can move into a tie for first place in the West if they can defeat the tanking Trail Blazers.

So, yeah, it is a great NBA night as we move one day closer to a great NFL weekend with wild card playoff games taking place. If weather conditions are keeping you inside, you have better choices tonight than most nights.

New York is taking a five-game winning streak into this game and has the good fortune of not having to go against Luka Doncic, who is out with a knee injury. This is an alumni game for Jalen Brunson against his former team, and NBA players get stoked for those types of opportunities. New York has not lost since OG Anunoby came aboard in a trade, and they are arguable the hottest team in the East and are favored by 4. With Doncic out, this one could get away from the Mavs quickly … unless ex-Knick Tim Hardaway Jr. has a revenge game.

Aside from Doncic’s absence, big men Maxi Kleber and Dereck Lively are doubtful with foot injuries, and Grant Williams is questionable with a right ankle sprain. That makes the Mavs a donut team: They have a hole in the middle. New York is not reporting any injuries aside from backup center Jericho Sims being day to day. That should open plenty of playing time for Isaiah Hartenstein, who had 14 rebounds last night instead of the 18 we were touting.

He did not reach this number last game against Portland because he played only 28 minutes and grabbed 14 boards. His workload should increase with Sims injured and Taj Gibson having been released. He is the only true center on the roster, and although we expect coach Tom Thibodeau to spell him with Josh Hart, Hart is a small forward who cannot match up with Dwight Powell. If Hartenstein’s minutes are in the mid-30s, he should reach 18 boards for the third time in five games.

Although they are both still listed among the top nine teams when it comes to championship odds, neither of these teams has played particularly well for any kind of a sustained stretch this season. The Lakers play host with a not-so-gaudy record of 19-19 and the Suns are just a half-game in front of them at 19-18. Phoenix has had a legitimate excuse because of injuries. The Lakers simply do not have enough depth behind LeBron James and Antony Davis, which is the reason why trade speculation is rampant, as is speculation about Darvin Ham’s job security.

At a certain point, we are all going to have to acknowledge that Davis is the Lakers’ most capable player on both the offensive and defensive ends. They are going to have to ride him in much the same way they rode LeBron over the past few seasons. Davis is coming off a 41-point outing against Toronto and has reached 40 points three times this season. With Jusuf Nurkic slumping and nobody of note backing him up at center, Davis could very well post a season high (he has had 41 twice) in the second half of this TNT doubleheader. The odds are enticing enough to take that chance.
