Timberwolves vs. Celtics Predictions and Best Bets

There is no rhyme or reason to which games ESPN chooses to show to its national audience. This is why Zion Williamson and Steph Curry will be in the spotlight tonight on cable television in a matchup of the sixth-best and the 12th-best teams in the Western Conference.

For those who have splurged on NBA League Pass, there is a better selection: The East-leading Boston Celtics playing host to the West-leading Minnesota Timberwolves in a matchup of two teams that have lost a combined 18 games all season.

The Celtics are favored by a whopping 7.5 points, making it the largest underdog line the Wolves have had pinned to them all season. It is worth noting that Boston is 11-6-0 as a home favorite and Minnesota is 2-5-0 as a road ‘dog,’ but that line still seems rather large … and yet another sign that the team led by Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert is quite far under the radar when it comes to national recognition.

Granted, the Timberwolves have not won a playoff series since 2004 and two decades of watching the second round from their sofas has left folks in Minnesota wondering whether this current season is some sort of a mirage.

The standings are what they are and Minnesota is coming into this No. 1 vs. No. 1 meeting fresh off a 21-point victory over the Orlando Magic last night. Finishing a four-game road trip with the second half of a back-to-back is less than ideal, and Minnesota is 0-2 against the spread with no rest this season.

So, all signs point to a big Boston victory, but they play these games for a reason, and tonight we find out whether coach Chris Finch seizes upon the gambling angle in his pre-game speech to fire up his underappreciated team.

The thinking here is that these teams are more evenly matched than the oddsmakers would have you believe, and the Wolves will be the more inspired team. That does not mean that we are predicting a Minnesota win, but the extra inspiration should translate into a little extra oomph that could help out the Same Game Parlay we are touting.

Heck, respect matters to NBA players, and this line could be seen as disrespectful in the visiting locker room. If so, we have a visiting first-place team coming onto the court looking to make a statement against a Celtics team coming off a two-point, high-scoring loss to the Indiana Pacers.

Jayson Tatum is expected to play after sitting out of the loss to the Pacers with an ankle sprain, but Kristaps Porzingis (knee contusion), Jrue Holiday (elbow sprain) and Al Horford (non-COVID illness) are all listed as questionable, so we are staying away from those three key Celtics cogs.

Best NBA Same Game Parlay Picks Today for Timberwolves vs Celtics: 4 Legs Parlay Picks (+1095)

Jaylen Brown 30+ points

Brown is coming off a 40-point outing against the Pacers as he was the focus of the offense with Tatum sidelined, and he rose to the occasion by shooting 17-for-26 for a season-high 40 points. Brown had 31 points the previous game, and he has had 30 or more seven times this season. When these teams played Nov. 6, he scored 26. The thinking here is that with three key players questionable, Brown’s offense will be relied upon a little extra.

SGP-Pick 1: Jaylen Brown to score at least 30 points (+310)

Jayson Tatum: 2+ steals

The last time these teams played, Tatum came up with five steals, a total he also reached Dec. 28 against Detroit. Although he is not widely known as a defensive specialist, Tatum is a heady player who anticipates opponents’ moves based upon their tendencies, and Holiday has been tutoring him throughout this season on individual defensive principles. He has had at least two steals in eight games this season, and he had a pair of steaks in these teams’ second meeting last season.

SGP-Leg 2 Pick: Jayson Tatum to have at least two steals (+190)

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Anthony Edwards 3+ 3-pointers

The All-Star is coming off his worst game of the season, a 6-point outing against Orlando that represented his lowest-scoring game of the season. The Antman has a lot of pride, and we expect him to bounce back in a big way in the ultimate measuring stick game for Minnesota. When Edwards scored 9 points against Dallas on 3-for-19 shooting, he came back the next game and scored 37 points while making seven 3-pointers. Last season, he bounced back from a 9 point outing against San Antonio with seven 3s in the next game, so a bounce-back is not unprecedented.

The pick: Anthony Edwards to make at least three 3-pointers (+235)

Leg-4 SGP Pick: Karl Anthony Towns 3+ 3-pointers

Towns also had a dud of a game against Orlando by his standards, though not as bad as Edwards. Towns missed both of his 3-point attempts, the first time in 12 games that he took a donut. He averages 6.6 attempts per game, so it is not a question of whether he’ll take his share of 3s, but whether he will make them. He has made at least three 3-pointers in 13 games this season.

The pick: Karl Anthony Towns to make at least three 3-pointers (+180)

Put those four picks together in a Betway Same Game Parlay, and a $10 wager would return $1,105.28. Good luck!
