We get the Philadelphia 76ers on TNT tonight, but we do not get James Harden and his revisionist history. The bearded one will not make his Sixers debut until after the break.

That takes a little of the glow off of tonight’s matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks, but not all of it.

Philadelphia has a chance to go into the break tied with Cleveland and would move into third place in the East with a win. The Sixers’ fan base is fired up following the trade of Ben Simmons and others for Harden, and they continue to have the leading MVP candidate in Joel Embiid despite DeMar DeRozan, touted here Tuesday as a smart MVP pick, having seen his odds drop from +4000 to +3000 over the past 48 hours.

Safe to say that if the Sixers suffer another 48-point loss as they did two nights ago at Boston, Embiid will no longer occupy the favorite’s spot. And with everyone in the NBA in getaway mode on the final day of games before the break, we must take the fight-or-flight angle into account tonight.

What we saw on Wednesday can be a bit of a guide. As good as the Celtics were on Tuesday, they were the opposite last night in losing to the Detroit Pistons to remain sixth in the East. Brooklyn looked like a lost cause against the Knicks when trailing by 28, but the Nets rallied and got the victory at Madison Square Garden. Also, the Grizzlies lost despite another great night from Ja Morant, while LeBron James looked ageless again and Chris Paul went out and lost his cool and got ejected.

The best of the best are headed to Cleveland for All-Star Weekend, and everyone else will scatter like the wind at some point today or tomorrow as the league hits the mid-winter reset button. So how can we all go into the weekend counting our profits?

Follow along.

First of all, the drop in DeRozan’s odds do not make him unplayable. Quite the contrary now that he is being mentioned in the same sentence with Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain, his latest accomplishment setting the NBA record for most consecutive games (seven) scoring at least 35 points and shooting better than 50 per cent. DeRozan will be starting alongside four former MVPs in LeBron James, Steph Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic on Sunday, and it would not be surprising to hear any or all of those players pump up DeRozan’s MVP candidacy between now and the end of the weekend’s festivities in Cleveland.

The Bulls have not even made the playoffs since 2017 and have not won a series since 2015, and DeRozan’s role in the franchise renaissance will loom large with voters (who were polled recently by ESPN before Embiid started self-advocating).

Also, Josh Giddey of the Oklahoma City Thunder has now recorded three straight triple-doubles, becoming the first NBA rookie to do that since Oscar Robertson. He will need a bunch more to supplant Evan Mobley of Cleveland as the Rookie of the Year favorite, but we would not put it past him as he is getting better as the season progresses. At +1100, there is a nifty wager.

So get those ones while the getting is good, and before you put down a single penny on tonight’s tricky slate, which we will now take a look at:

Miami (-4.5) at Charlotte: Finishing tied for first is important to the Heat, but they are operating at a personnel deficit tonight with Tyler Herro out and Jimmy Butler questionable because of a shoulder strain. So the spread, money line and over/unders are best avoided until closer to tipoff. As for the Hornets, Terry Rozier has scored at least 25 in three straight and should go over 20.5. Miles Bridges has been hot, too, but he could end up getting defended by Butler, so keep an eye on that one for closer to tipoff. Even if Butler is not out, Bridges should go over 30.5 combined points, rebounds and assists.

Washington (+5) at Brooklyn: After their comeback victory last night in Manhattan, are the Nets due for a letdown tonight back in Kings County? Brooklyn has gone 2-1 against the Wizards this season and will have Seth Curry and Andre Drummond available for this one, a week after a one-point loss at Washington. With Drummond coming off a 19-rebound performance vs. the Knicks, we like him to go over 11.5 rebounds.

Dallas (-3) at New Orleans: The Mavs ruined our parlay card two nights ago by defeating Miami, and it would not be surprising to see them enter the break with six wins in seven games. The over/under of 214.5 is the lowest on the board tonight, and Dallas has failed to reach that number in four of the last five games. With the Mavs holding an NBA-worst 19-37-2 record on over/unders, the temptation is to stick with that trend. But the Pelicans have struggled defensively since acquiring C.J. McCollum from Portland, and the smart play is to anticipate a lack of defense on getaway night for the rare Mavs’ over.

Philadelphia (+6.5) at Milwaukee: Embiid is advocating for himself for the MVP, which may backfire with voters who believe self-promotion is ill-advised. He is certainly worthy as of late (the Celtics loss excluded), averaging 30.3 points and 13.0 rebounds in the month of February. But tonight he will be matched against a pair of strong defenders in Bobby Portis and the recently acquired Serge Ibaka, and then there is the matter of Milwaukee wanting to finish before the break with some mojo. The Bucks are only 9-17-0 against the spread at home as a favorite, so give the points and hope this one is more entertaining than what TNT and its viewers had to suffer through Tuesday.

Houston (+11) at L.A. Clippers: The Rockets had a chance to tie at the final buzzer last night in Phoenix, but Eric Gordon missed a three. Now they are getting an awful lot of points against a fairly decent Clippers team that has hovered within two or three games of .500 pretty much all season. But winning by at least 12? The Clips have done that 11 times this season without having faced Houston yet (the teams will meet three times between now and March 1). The Clips are only 4-10-1 with a rest advantage, so take the points, and if you are feeling especially lucky, take a flyer on the money line with Houston +435. As the Pistons showed us last night, every dog has its day. That applies to ‘dogs, too.
