Whether it's a Friday night treat or a quick solution for a healthy bite on a busy lunchtime, it's comforting to know that we can order whatever food we’re craving with the touch of a button.

With this in mind, we’ve revealed the most popular takeout food options in the US, as well as the states and cities home to the biggest takeaway lovers. Analyzing the number of delivery restaurants for the most popular cuisines in cities across the nation, we’ve also revealed which cities are home to the most variety when getting your takeout fix.

The 10 most popular cuisines takeout options in the US

With data suggesting that Americans are spending an average of $3,631 on takeout food per year, around $70 per week, it’s safe to say that we are truly a nation of food lovers, but which foods do we love the most?

An all round favorite, pizza is revealed to be the most popular takeout option in the US with Americans searching for “pizza takeout” and “pizza delivery” 309,100 times a month on average. This amounts to 76% of all monthly Google searches for the foods analyzed in this study.

Another classic crowd pleaser, Chinese food comes in second place as the most popular takeout cuisine in the US with 37,500 searches being made per month. Meanwhile sushi comes in third with 22,900 searches.

The Top 10 biggest takeout lovers by state

Looking at the total number of searches for takeout cuisines and delivery apps across the US by population, we’ve also revealed the states home to the highest concentration of takeout lovers.

New York is revealed to be home to the biggest takeout lovers with 45 searches per 1,000 residents being made every month for takeout and delivery food, as well as food delivery apps. Maryland comes in close second with 41 searches being made per 1,000 residents each month, followed by Colorado with 38.

The Top 10 states with the fewest takeout lovers

According to searches for takeout cuisines and takeout apps per capita, Vermont is revealed to be the state home to the lowest concentration of takeout lover with just  16 searches being made per 1,000 residents every month. Meanwhile, Wyoming comes in second with 19 searches being made per 1,000 capita, followed by South Dakota with 20.

How much are Americans spending on takeout each year?

Whilst our research shows New York as the state home to the highest concentration of takeout lovers, recent data from The Bureau of Economic Analysis has shown that it’s residents in the District of Columbia who are spending the most on takeout. Amounting to a whopping $6,241 per household annually, residents here are spending $120 a week on food prepared away from home. 

Hawaii comes in second place as the biggest spenders on takeout ($4,647), spending almost $1,600 less than residents in the District of Columbia, whilst Maine comes in third ($4,499).

Meanwhile, Oklahoma is the state where residents are spending the least on takeout ($2,756 per year on average). 

The biggest takeout lovers by city

From a seedlist of the top 50 most populated cities in the US, we’ve also revealed the cities home to the highest concentration of takeaway lovers by analyzing search data for takeout cuisines and delivery apps per 1,000 residents

Atlanta is revealed to be the city home to the most takeout lovers with 153 searches being made per 1,000 residents every month (80,010 in total). Miami comes in second place with 132 searches being made per 1,000 residents every month (60,160 in total), followed by Baltimore where 122 searches are made per 1,000 residents each month (70,200 in total).

Meanwhile, New York City has to settle for fifteenth place in our city ranking with 66 searches being made per 1,000 residents every month. This is due to its high population density of 8,992,908 as of 2023.

The cities with the fewest takeout lovers

Looking at the cities with the fewest number of searches for takeout cuisines and delivery apps per capita, El Paso in Texas is revealed to be home to the lowest concentration of takeout lovers with just 30 searches being made per 1,000 capita every month. 

El Paso is followed by Oklahoma City where 31 searches are made every month per 1,000 capita, whilst Bakersfield in California comes in third where 3 searches are made per 1,000 residents.

Interestingly, three Texan cities rank in the top 10 cities home to the fewest takeout lovers with El Paso, Arlington and Fort Worth all featuring. 

The cities with the most takeout options for our favorite cuisines

Analyzing data for the number of takeout restaurants for America’s top five cuisines, San Francisco is revealed to have the most takeout options per 10,000 residents (8.4 per 10,000 residents)

Portland comes in second place with 7 takeout restaurants for the most popular cuisines per 10,000 residents, followed by Long Beach in third with 6.9.

Methodology

  • Google Keyword Planner was used to find the search volume for popular takeout and delivery food items and cuisines, as well as delivery apps. This was taken for each of the 50 states and the top 50 most populated cities in the US. Data from between Feb 2022 and Jan 2023 was taken.
  • GrubHub was used to find the number of delivery restaurants offering the top 5 most popular food options for the top 50 most populated cities in the US. Data taken on 03/13/23.
