After a disappointing first performance and subsequent result against Wales in the opening game of the USMNT World Cup campaign, fans saw what appeared to be a totally different US team against England on Friday afternoon.

The USA currently have two points and sit third in Group B following back-to-back draws, and while they should be proud of their performance against a talented England team, the result does mean they have to win against Iran if they wish to progress.

The USA went into their second group game against England as a big underdog, but it was the USMNT that controlled the game for the majority. They did an excellent job of frustrating a very talented England team, who were on a high after scoring six goals in their previous game. The USA dominated the middle of the park with a high-energy performance, with their midfield players working so hard for the team both in and out of possession.

England were restricted to only three shots on target throughout the entirety of the game, and were unable to get behind the solid centre back pairing of Tim Ream and Walker Zimmerman. As those frustrations grew, the US team's counters proved dangerous. In terms of chance creation, Weston McKinnie had a great chance to take the lead that flashed over, before Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar with sweetly struck left-footed strike from the edge of the box. USA will be disappointed to have drawn the game given their overall domination and performance levels.

Looking forward to the game vs Iran on Tuesday, the USA will need to reproduce the same performance levels they showed against England, but will need to convert their chances this time round. Iran will know that USA need to play on the front foot as nothing less than a win is good enough to progress. Therefore, expect Iran to set up tactically with 11 men behind the ball, playing counter-attacking football.

The Iranian national team started out this World Cup tournament extremely disorganized and lacking confidence against an England side that fully capitalized on this. There was a complete turnaround vs Wales as they won 2-0, having 21 shots in the process despite only having 38 per cent of the ball. This gives the Iran team belief in the gameplan going into a massive fixture against the USMNT.

Iran has some great quality going forward. Porto striker Mehdi Taremi is one of their most dangerous threats and doesn’t need many opportunities to score. While they lost 6-2 in their game against England, Taremi scored two goals off very limited service. I would like to see him run at Iran with a little more intensity in this game and, knowing the importance of the result, that’s exactly what I expect to see.

A moment of magic from Pulisic to send the USA through to the knockouts stages seems to be written in the stars in this one. While I like Timothy Weah as a goalscoring option if he gets the right service, Pulisic led the USMNT in goals during their World Cup qualifying campaign, scoring five times in ten games. He is overdue on the main stage.
