The United States women’s national soccer team is the most successful in the history of the sport. Since the first Women’s World Cup tournament in 1991, the USWNT has won four titles, including that inaugural event, which was held in China.

The U.S. women have played in five of the eight World Cup finals to date -- winning four of them. They beat Norway in 1991, China in 1999, Japan in 2015, and most recently, the Netherlands in 2019. Having won the last two tournaments, this year’s American team is going for a three-peat, which would be the first in either men’s or women’s World Cup history.

Let’s take a closer look at the USWNT’s roster, the team’s odds of winning the Women’s World Cup, and more things about the team that fans might need to know in these remaining few days before the tournament opens and the Americans begin their quest for another World Cup title.

USWNT Last World Cup Performance

The 2019 Women’s World Cup took place in France, and the Americans got off to a hot start by routing Thailand 13-0 in their opening game of the group stage.

Alex Morgan scored five goals in that game, and the U.S. very quickly established its dominance of the competition, breezing through its group with wins over Thailand, Chile, and Sweden.

Two penalties from USWNT winger Megan Rapinoe helped to get the U.S. past Spain in the Round of 16, and Rapinoe scored two more goals in the quarterfinals against France to propel the favorites into the semifinal round.

After knocking the host nation out of the tournament, the Americans were the clear team to beat at the 2019 competition. England’s Lionesses gave the USWNT a tough battle in the semis, but the U.S. squad prevailed and advanced to yet another World Cup final, this time against the Netherlands.

The final game was a showdown between the reigning world champions and the European champions, making for quite the spectacle in front of more than 50,000 fans. Rapinoe made it 1-0 on a penalty kick, and Rose Lavelle followed up only minutes later with a sweet run of her own and a finish that put the game on ice.

USWNT - 2023 World Cup Schedule

The American women’s schedule for the 2023 tournament kicks off with a game against Vietnam, followed by a rematch against their 2019 World Cup final opponents, the Netherlands. Their third and final USWNT group-stage game will be played against Portugal, a team capable of challenging the very best in the world.

Women’s World Cup betting odds have the U.S. as a clear favorite to win Group E, which would mean facing the runner-up of Group G in the Round of 16. Group G includes Argentina, Italy, Sweden, and South Africa. One of these four would be tasked with slowing down the USA in the first knockout match.

Should the U.S. continue to advance, the Americans would then likely meet a team such as Norway, Spain, or Japan in the quarterfinals. The semifinals could then end up being a rematch with the Netherlands, should both teams make it that far.

USWNT World Cup Roster 2023

The 2023 USWNT roster is a very interesting blend of experienced veteran leaders and young talent that has been coming up through the ranks. The U.S. has one of the most efficient systems in world soccer, developing its young women through college soccer and the NWSL, and that efficiency is reflected in the 2023 World Cup roster.

Two of the biggest reasons that Women’s World Cup betting odds favor the Americans are Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe. Morgan is the most experienced player on the roster with 18 World Cup appearances to her name. She has scored six goals in her World Cup career, while Megan Rapinoe has scored nine goals in 17 matches.

Fourteen U.S. players are making their World Cup debuts, including exciting striker Sophia Smith of the Portland Thorns and 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Both strikers have proven themselves at the club level, and Smith figures into our pre-tournament predictions as a likely winner of the tournament's Golden Boot.

Thompson is the youngest member of the squad, with 21-year-old Trinity Rodman joining her as the only two U.S. players age 21 or younger.

The USWNT starting lineup at this year's Women’s World Cup will be a perfect blend of experienced talent and young brilliance -- featuring some of the game's best players. That formula could prove to be crucial in pulling off a three-peat.

Best United States Women’s National Soccer Team Futures Bets Today

Here are my latest top USWNT futures bets. Be sure to explore my other predictions for this tournament, including the favorite to win Women’s World Cup, Women’s World cup sleepers, odds to win the Women’s World Cup, and Women's World Cup group stage predictions.

Top Goal scorer

Alex Morgan is the favorite to lead all players in goal scoring -- having already been a pivotal part of the USWNT attack in the team's last two World Cup championships. Her Women’s World Cup Golden Boot odds stand at +400, but it’s Sophia Smith that has caught our attention as an emerging prospect for the award.

Smith is coming into her first World Cup in elite form with 10 goals in 12 NWSL starts and a blistering hat trick in a high-level match against the Washington Spirit only a couple of weeks ago.

While Morgan's odds are at +400, Smith’s are in second place at +650, and the two women are the only players currently under +1000. We have been firm on this a couple of times already, but Sophia Smith feels like great value as a frontrunner for the Golden Boot, and we’re backing her in our soccer betting predictions for the tournament.

The Pick: Sophia Smith to win Golden Boot (+650)

Tournament Winner

Betting on the USWNT to win its group doesn’t offer great value. They have -350 odds, but the Netherlands also has a very good team. A tie in that game or, dare I say, a loss could put the Americans’ spot at the top of Group E in jeopardy, so it just isn’t worth the risk. If they do win their group, the Americans’ odds to advance further in this Women’s World Cup are even less appealing.

That said, the USWNT odds to win the 2023 World Cup stand at +250, and for a tournament favorite that feels like great value. The three-peat would be a historic event in women’s soccer, and the USWNT’s odds to win the World Cup are shorter than every other team for a reason.

European champion England has Women’s World Cup 2023 odds of +350, and Spain is another close bet at +450. Germany, which England beat in the Euro final, is currently at +650.

There is no squad more experienced at this level than the USWNT, which makes the Americans the team to beat. Why not back the three-peat and win some money in the process of watching this team pursue its goal?

When it comes to Women’s World Cup betting, no wagerers have had more success than those who bet on the USWNT, so we feel pretty good about backing the Americans once again this year.

The USWNT has the best odds to win the Women’s World Cup, and we’re here for it.
