Portugal’s FC Porto took a surprising 1-0 lead in its UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup with Arsenal by winning the first leg at home on Feb. 21, as striker Wenderson Galeno scored a stoppage-time winner. It was the game’s only goal, and it put the pressure on Arsenal to bounce back from that setback and win the second leg in London on Tuesday.

Arsenal is certainly capable of a bounce-back, since this team continues to play outstanding soccer in the English Premier League. Arsenal has scored 10 goals over its last two EPL games, including last Monday’s 6-0 hammering of Sheffield United.

However, the Gunners’ upcoming opponents on Tuesday night, FC Porto, put together what was arguably an even more impressive victory last weekend by beating SL Benfica 5-0 in an O Classico rivalry match. It was a big win for Porto, which is working to get its disappointing Liga Portugal season back on track.

Sérgio Conceição is looking to reach his third Champions League quarterfinal round as Porto’s manager, but this will no doubt be a tough task against one of the best attacking teams in England, if not all of Europe. However, after already having managed to keep Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s men at bay in the first leg at Estadio Dragaõ, Porto’s players have high hopes that they can do it again for another 90 high-intensity minutes on Tuesday at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal vs. FC Porto Lineups and Injuries

Arsenal could go into this match without Ukrainian left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, who has been out since early February with a calf issue. Japanese right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu is also expected to be out with the same issue, although both men might still be available, since their timetables for recovery remain unclear.

The same applies to Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli, who suffered a foot injury early in Monday’s 6-0 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta said that Martinelli suffered a cut on his foot, and Arsenal fans will have to wait and see if he will be available for this crucial Champions League knockout-round match.

The biggest absence for FC Porto could be forward Mehdi Taremi, who hasn’t played since his team’s 3-2 loss to Arouca on Feb. 12. The Iranian forward played a key role in getting his team to the Champions League Round of 16 by scoring two goals in the competition’s group stage. While Taremi’s absence isn’t guaranteed on Tuesday, it would be a big blow for the visitors.

In addition to Taremi, other notable players missing for Porto are center-back Ivan Marcano and left-back Zaidu, who have both been out long-term with cruciate ligament tears.

Best 2024 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Predictions and Same-Game Parlay Picks Today: Arsenal vs. FC Porto

Win/Draw/Win

We will kick off this set of Champions League prop bets in the W/D/W market. Arsenal will be looking to put the Leg 1 disappointment behind it here by moving on to the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since 2010.

As I have mentioned here in the past, Arsenal has been one of the more reliable European soccer picks in recent months. The Gunners have won seven consecutive Premier League games as they remain in the hunt for the EPL title.

This game promises to be trickier than many of Arsenal’s previous matches, however, and we can expect FC Porto to offer more resistance than what Arsenal saw from Sheffield United and Burnley, because this season’s editions of both those clubs seem destined to rank among the worst Premier League teams of all time.

This will not be smooth sailing for the Gunners, but they should have enough in them to get through this game and advance if players such as Bukayo Saka can continue to play the way they have been playing.

The Pick: Arsenal to Qualify (-334)
Total Goals

This Arsenal team is in superb form, and the nature of its recent wins has been evidence of that. The Gunners have scored a whopping 31 goals over their last seven games -- an average of 4.4 per match -- as they have been putting their foot on the gas from the opening whistle.

Impressively, Arsenal’s goals have been well-distributed throughout the team. Although fan favorite Bukayo Saka leads the way with 16 goals across all competitions, players such as Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz have each also chipped in a few goals over the last month or so.

Since Porto took its game up a notch in last weekend’s 5-0 win over Benfica, there’s definitely plenty of offensive firepower on tap for this one. I predict there will be more than 2.5 goals scored here.

The Pick: Over 2.5 goals (-167)

Both Teams to Score

Although the first leg of this matchup was a relatively defensive affair, I can see this match being more open. The Gunners will need to come out on the attack here in front of their expectant and animated home crowd in north London. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s men have been extremely good at doing just that recently -- scoring first-half goals in each of their last five Premier League games.

We can expect Porto to set up defensively, but if Arsenal can score the way I expect them to, then the visitors are going to have to come out of their defensive block as the game goes on. Porto definitely has the offensive talent to do that, even if Mehdi Taremi is absent for this one.

Keep an eye on Brazilian Porto striker Evanilson, who leads his team in scoring with 21 goals in 31 appearances this season. The Portuguese team has been involved in several high-scoring games in this year’s Champions League, including a 5-3 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk and a 4-1 win at Antwerp during group-stage play.

Expect both teams to get on the scoresheet here as we look forward to another big night of European soccer.
