The Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers will meet for the second time this season on Thursday night, and both will be looking to make a statement in this game. One month ago, on Feb. 15 in Toronto, these teams played an overtime thriller that the Leafs won on the strength of Auston Matthews’ natural hat trick in the second period. The Flyers scored twice in the final 5:46 of that game to force the OT, but Toronto had the last laugh on a goal by William Nylander less than one minute into the 3-on-3 play. Despite the final score, it was a moral victory for the Flyers, who were tremendous in their comeback effort against one of the NHL’s better teams.

Maple Leafs at Flyers Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers have completely turned things around this season and are starting to look like a team that could be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. While they will have to prove their worth in the upcoming playoffs, there’s no question that this team’s improvement over last season is remarkable in itself. Toronto, meanwhile, is once again among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Winners of two of their last three games, the Maple Leafs will look to keep building momentum at Philadelphia on Thursday night.

Maple Leafs vs. Flyers Predictions and Picks

The Philadelphia Flyers’ success this season is largely attributable to the team’s stellar defensive play. Philadelphia is allowing the NHL’ 11th-fewest goals this season, and only one team, Carolina, is giving up fewer shots on goal per game. Under head coach John Tortorella, the Flyers have been suffocating opponents. In terms of goals scored, Philly ranks in the middle of NHL pack, but that won’t be the case forever because the Flyers are one of the more aggressive teams in the offensive zone this season. Indeed, only Florida and Edmonton fire more shots on goal than Philadelphia.

The Maple Leafs are strong at both ends of the ice, but the stingy Flyers defense tested them when the teams met a month ago in Toronto. In that same game, Philadelphia managed to erupt for two late third-period goals that forced overtime. Based on what we saw on Feb. 15, give me the Flyers to play the spoiler role on Thursday night. They will test Toronto goaltender Illya Samsonov for all three periods, since they won’t want to have to wait for the final stages of the third like last time.

The Pick: Philadelphia Flyers ML (+100)

Defense has been the focus in both Philadelphia and Toronto of late, as both teams have been strong in their own end of the ice. It took a third-period Philadelphia scoring outburst and an overtime goal for these teams to exceed the projected over/under total in their last meeting, but they might not be so lucky this time. Despite losing No. 1 goaltender Carter Hart to off-ice issues, the Flyers have remained sharp when playing defense. Goaltender Samuel Ersson has also played extremely well in goal and will need a stellar performance to beat Toronto in front of his home crowd. The Flyers did a great job defensively in the Feb. 15 game -- holding the Maple Leafs to 24 shots. Were it not for Auston Matthews’ second-period heroics that night, the Flyers likely would have won.

The Pick: Under 6.5 (-120)

Best NHL Player-Prop Bets for Maple Leafs vs. Flyers:

Ilya Samsonov

Toronto goaltender Ilya Samsonov has been amazing this season, as is evidenced by his 17-5-6 record and .877 save percentage. While he has let a few games get away from him, Samsonov has been an extremely reliable goalie for the Leafs. Last month in Toronto, the Flyers pressured Samsonov throughout the third period and scored two late goals to force overtime. Head coach John Tortorella will miss this game due to a suspension, but he’ll certainly expect his Flyers to bring last month’s third-period intensity into this matchup. Philadelphia ranks third in the NHL for shots on goal per game this season, and this team will certainly be teeing off on Thursday night at home. Flyers shots don’t always result in goals, of course, and given Samsonov’s talent, I like him to exceed his saves total on Thursday night.

The Pick: Ilya Samsonov over 26.5 saves (-134)

Best Same-Game Parlay NHL bets today for Maple Leafs vs. Flyers: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+650)

Puck Line I’m going to play the first leg of this same-game parlay very conservatively by taking the Flyers +2.5. The first meeting of these teams was a close battle, and Philly’s defense can keep it in any game. Look for the Flyers to defend their home ice on Thursday night and for their aggressive offense to score some goals.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Philadelphia Flyers +2.5 (-525)

First Period These teams saw each other just under a month ago, and I think the first period will be similar to what unfolded that night in Toronto. The Leafs and Flyers will use the first 20 minutes to feel each other out, and the Flyers’ defense will suffocate Toronto the way it did in the first matchup. Give me the first period under 1.5 goals as the second leg of this parlay.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Under 1.5 goals (+100)

Flyers Total Goals The Flyers managed to turn up the heat on Toronto at the end of the third period on Feb. 15, and I think they will carry that offensive-zone aggressiveness into Thursday’s game. If Philadelphia plays that same style for more than just the final five minutes, then the Flyers should be able to take care of business without any trouble on Thursday night.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Flyers goals over 3.5 (+145)
