The first of these three games has the Montreal Canadiens visiting the Philadelphia Flyers. Let’s dive into this matchup for a complete breakdown to determine some best bets.

Canadiens at Flyers Preview

The Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers meet for the first time in the current 2023-24 NHL season on Wednesday night. Montreal enters this matchup having gone 2-1 since the start of the new year, and the Habs are coming off of an impressive 4-3 OT shootout win over the New York Rangers. The Flyers, meanwhile, are just 1-3 in the 2024 portion of their schedule and are really trying to regain their footing. Goaltenders Cayden Primeau of Montreal and Samuel Ersson of Philadelphia will be the men in net on Wednesday night.
Canadiens vs. Flyers Predictions and NHL Picks 

If the Flyers were starting their No. 1 goaltender, Carter Hart, in this game, then I would be all over this Philadelphia team to win on Wednesday night. Hart simply provides that much more of an edge for the Flyers when he’s in goal. Although backup Samuel Ersson doesn’t represent a huge statistical dropoff compared to Hart  --in fact, Ersson has a slightly lower goals-against average -- the bottom line is that Hart is just more talented.

Goaltenders matter a lot in hockey, but the way Philly has been playing defense this season, it sometimes doesn’t even matter which netminder starts. Thanks to their stellar defensive play, the Flyers are allowing the NHL’s seventh-fewest goals and seventh-fewest shots on goal per game this season. Philadelphia’s defense is getting an even bigger boost now that blueliner Jamie Drysdale has been added via a trade with Anaheim. Drysdale, a bona fide NHL top-four defenseman, is expected to join Travis Sanheim on the team’s top pairing for Wednesday.

The future isn’t as bright in Montreal. The Canadiens are almost a complete opposite of the Flyers in allowing the NHL’s seventh most goals and fourth-most shots on goal this season. Look for the Flyers to suffocate a Montreal offense that ranks only 28th in the 32-team league when it comes to goals scored per game. It could feel like a very long three periods for the Habs, as the Flyers will win by more than two goals on Wednesday night.

The Pick: Philadelphia Flyers -1.5 (+130)

The total in this one is tricky to predict. I truly see the Canadiens struggling to score, because the Flyers’ defense will be too much for them. The Habs have a tough time getting going offensively, and having to do it against one of the league’s best defensive squads likely means Montreal is in for a long night. However, the Flyers aren’t an offensive machine, either. Even though the Canadiens are known to struggle defensively, I can see this being a low-scoring game that Philadelphia controls for all three periods. I lean toward the under for this total on Wednesday night.

Flyers winger Cam Atkinson is trying to emerge as one of the top skaters in Philadelphia. He got 2023-24 off to a hot start by scoring a majority of his eight goals in the first few weeks of the season, Unfortunately, Atkinson hasn’t found the back of the net since a Nov. 11 game against the Los Angeles Kings. Although he hasn’t been scoring, Atkinson has remained aggressive in the offensive zone and has exceeded his current prop total for shots on goal in three of his last five games. He will be facing an inferior Montreal Canadiens defense on Wednesday night, so look for Atkinson to take advantage with plenty of shots. He might even find the back of the net.

Game For the first leg of this same-game parlay, I’m going to pick a winner.  I’ll remain conservative here by going with the Philadelphia Flyers on the money line. As I mentioned above, the Flyers have a huge advantage defensively, and the Montreal Canadiens will struggle to move the puck and create scoring opportunities. This should put the Flyers in a perfect position to control Wednesday’s game and come away with a win.

Cam Atkinson Cam Atkinson has been in a scoring drought since Philly’s Nov. 11 game against Los Angeles. The chance to go up against Montreal’s inferior defense is just what the doctor ordered to get him back on track. Don’t’ forget that he started the 2023-24 NHL season on fire. There is a lot of value here on this prop. I’ll take Atkinson to score for this second leg.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Cam Atkinson anytime goalscorer (+245)

Flyers Goals It’s possible that the Flyers will pick up a shutout on Wednesday, since the Montreal Canadiens are really going to struggle to score against Philadelphia’s defense. The Flyers have shut out three teams this season, and their last one was a 1-0 win over Detroit on Dec. 16. Shutout or not, they will score more than one goal this time.  Give me the Flyers to score at least once in every period and perhaps capitalize on an empty-netter to end the game.
