The Cleveland Browns have emerged as a team in contention for more than just a berth in the NFL playoffs. Indeed, the fact that the Browns are one of only three teams with a shot at the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed is truly astounding given all the injuries they have had to battle through this season. Losing key players such as running back Nick Chubb and quarterback Deshaun Watson has not caused Cleveland to miss a beat, which is a little mind-boggling.

To get that No. 1 seed, the Browns would need to win out and hope that both the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens lose each of their remaining games. That makes No. 1 a real long shot for Cleveland, but clinching a playoff spot can happen as soon as this week with a win over the Jets on Thursday night.

It’s a very different story in New York, where the Jets (6-9) are trying to build what could be critical momentum for the 2024 season. Jets general manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh are quickly running out of time to get this team into the playoffs, and they seemingly have only one season left to make things work with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback before they could lose their jobs. This season’s two remaining games might not feel significant to Jets fans, but for those running the show, these games are vital as far as setting the right tone for a successful 2024 campaign.

Jets vs. Browns Preview

Cleveland’s season appeared to be spiraling out of control when starting quarterback Deshaun Watson got hurt in Week 10 and the team learned that the injury to his throwing shoulder would require season-ending surgery

Watson had already missed several games earlier in the season, so his total number of starts in 2023 was limited to just six games. The Browns had to scramble to find an answer at QB. Uncomfortable with the options inside their own ranks, they ended up inviting veteran Joe Flacco to join them just a few weeks ago.

Since then, Cleveland has gone on a miraculous run, and Flacco has outperformed all other quarterbacks who have played for the Browns in 2023, including the highly-paid Watson.

Flacco has started four games with Cleveland, earning himself a one-year contract in the process. The team has gone 3-1 over that span, winning their last three games. In his four starts, the 38-year-old veteran quarterback has thrown for 1,321 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The latest installment in his remarkable run of performances saw Flacco tally 368 passing yards and three TD passes in a 36-22 win at Houston last Sunday. Against the Texans, Flacco helped Amari Cooper set a Browns single-game record with 265 receiving yards.

Cooper has now caught passes for at least 100 yards in back-to-back games and seems to be enjoying life with Flacco at quarterback. His remarkable 265-yard performance included 11 receptions and two touchdowns.

This has been a fine run by the Browns, and it will likely land them in the playoffs. However, Flacco’s fearless determination to throw the football far down the field has also resulted in mistakes. He has thrown 10 touchdown passes, but he has also thrown seven interceptions in his four starts, as Cleveland has taken a real “nothing to lose” approach to its style of play late in the season.

The Browns’ offensive resurgence makes them a dangerous team, especially because they already had one of the NFL’s most talented defenses this season. Cleveland defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has done a phenomenal job with his players, who lead the entire league when it comes to defending against the pass.

That fact doesn’t bode well for the Jets, who have had very obvious -- and highly publicized -- offensive woes all season long. New York is now starting Trevor Siemian at QB, making him the team’s fourth starter at that key position this season. Siemian managed to throw for 217 yards, one touchdown, and a pick on Sunday against Washington, but the Commanders have had one of the NFL’ s worst secondaries in 2023.

If the Jets expect to have a strong offensive performance against the Browns’ defense at Cleveland, they will need to play their best game of the year. Establishing the run will be critical, and the entire offense should be feeling good about what running back Breece Hall achieved against Washington.

Hall has been lost in the chaos surrounding the Jets’ dismal offense this year, but he erupted for 95 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the 30-28 win over the Commanders. If New York’s offensive line can open gaps to get him going, the Jets might have a shot at pulling off an upset on the road.

Of course, the Jets’ defense is just as talented as the one the Browns have – already showing on numerous occasions that it can really disrupt an opponent’s game. Commanders quarterback Sam Howell was benched after throwing just six completions for 56 yards and two interceptions against the Jets on Sunday.

Flacco will be aggressive in this game, but Jets cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed might just meet him with the same energy in defending his receivers.

Jets at Browns Predictions and Pick

This is a tough matchup for the Jets, who haven’t exactly had an offense worth fearing this season. Their struggles have run deep through the quarterbacks and offensive line, and they have rarely shown any consistency when on offense.

Cleveland QB Joe Flacco might be prone to making mistakes, but he has also thrown for more than 300 yards in three straight weeks and is averaging more than 45 passing attempts per game. That’s so much volume that even a 50 to 55 percent success rate on Thursday would result in more passing yards than the Jets have managed in most games this season.

The Browns defense could easily pitch a shutout here, which is why the over/under total is set rather low. Bettors should be more concerned about the Jets scoring points than they are about the Browns, and I think we will see the home team cover the spread.

The Pick: Cleveland Browns -7.5 (-105)

Given the talent level on both teams’ defenses, this feels like the sort of game that could end with a score of 17-6, or at least something close to that mark. Without a very successful day on the ground, the Jets offense will have real trouble scoring. New York might have to rely on its defensive players to come up with a few points of their own.

Either way, the expectation of multiple turnovers and drives that lead to zero points gives me confidence in the under. This should be a defensive showdown -- one that slightly favors the home team. The Browns have a lot more on the line, and they will need to act accordingly.

The Pick: Under 34.5 Points (-105)

Best Jets vs Browns Player-Prop Bets Today Joe Flacco

I have been a fan of what veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has done since his arrival in Cleveland. After just four games, he is already in the conversation regarding the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. Just a few weeks away from his 39th birthday, Flacco clearly enjoys being out on the field again and is slinging the football freely as a result.

That said, Flacco has turned the ball over in all four of his starts for Cleveland. Uncorking it 40-plus times per game will come with an errant throw or two, so betting on one of those passes landing in the hands of someone on the talented Jets defense feels like a great play.

The Pick: Joe Flacco Over 0.5 Interceptions (-223)

Amari Cooper

The volume of passes and number of targets pointed in Cleveland wide receiver Amari Cooper’s direction has me feeling good about him having a third straight high-level performance.

Over the past three games, Cooper has caught quarterback Joe Flacco’s passes for 77, 109 and, of course, 265 receiving yards. He will face tight man-coverage against New York, but he will still get the targets.

Flacco has thrown Cooper’s way a total of 36 times in the past three games. He is giving Cooper every chance to make a play, and the wide receiver has responded by proving himself to be a major playmaker on multiple occasions. Cooper has caught 22 of Flacco’s 36 targets, which only proves that the Browns quarterback will aim that ball at Cooper no matter the level of coverage. That strategy should lead to Cooper catching passes for at least 60 yards against the Jets on Thursday.

The Pick: Amari Cooper Over 60.5 Receiving Yards (-115)
