2023 NFL Regular Season Game

Date: Thursday, Nov. 9
Time: 8:15 p.m. ET
Venue: Soldier Field, in Chicago, Ill.
TV Channel: Amazon Prime Video
Live Stream: FuboTV

The Carolina Panthers head to Chicago this week for a Thursday Night Football matchup that has some interesting storylines. While these two teams only have three wins between them, the outcome of this game is extremely important when it comes to the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

Chicago owns both its own pick and Carolina’s selection in the draft’s first round, having executed a trade last March that enabled Carolina to land quarterback Bryce Young. This year, that pick is looking pretty good for Chicago, since the Panthers are currently 1-7. A Chicago win on Thursday would only strengthen the value of that first-rounder.

If the Bears win, the Panthers would drop to 1-8, tying them with the Arizona Cardinals for the NFL’s worst record. However, if Chicago loses, the Bears will not have only lost the game, but will have also weakened their shot at the potential No. 1 overall pick.

Either way, the Bears will have two very high draft picks next April, but No. 1 overall is the golden egg.

Quarterback Justin Fields’ potential return to the Chicago lineup remains up in the air, since he has been a limited participant in practice so far this week due to his thumb injury. Rushing him back into action doesn’t make much sense, but the young quarterback is also quickly running out of time to prove himself as the face of the franchise’s future.

Panthers at Bears Preview

Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has had one of the nastiest introductions to pro football that I have seen in several years, and he struggled again last weekend against the Indianapolis Colts.

Young threw for 173 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, but he was picked off three times -- marking his third game this season with multiple interceptions. While he hasn’t performced particularly well, he also hasn’t had much help.

The Carolina rookie ranks in the NFL’s top 10 in pressures and is tied for fourth in terms of how many times he has been sacked this season. He is not getting any support from his cast of wide receivers either.

So far this year, Young’s only semi-reliable target has been Adam Thielen, who is currently a top five WR in PPR fantasy leagues for a reason. Thielen is the only guy that Young can be confident to find open, but even he is swallowed by the defense at times.

Without consistent pass-catchers or an elite-level talent who can make plays down the field, Young is often settling for short yardage -- resulting in failed drives and punts – or simply throwing the football away. He leads the NFL in throwaways this season, a stark reminder of his lack of options when it comes to looking downfield.

There’s no doubt Young needs to be better, but so does the Panthers organization. Carolina recently changed its offensive play-caller, as head coach Frank Reich gave the keys to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. Perhaps in time that switch will give the Panthers a better offense, but this team is currently far from where it needs to be to succeed.

The offensive line is struggling badly. Tackle Ikem Ekwonu, a 2022 first-round draft pick, has allowed five sacks and 20 pressures, while his counterpart on the opposite side of center, Taylor Moton, is giving up even more hurries. The guards are just bad, and rookie Chandler Zavala has some of the worst grades of any “starter” in the NFL right now.

While things look pretty bleak for Carolina, the Panthers will be facing a team that they have the potential to beat on Thursday night. Chicago hasn't exactly had it easy this year, either, and the Bears’ game against the New Orleans Saints last Sunday was one to forget.

Undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent has made some nice plays in the games he’s played for Chicago, and his work ethic and determination have rightly earned him a place on the team. However, Sunday proved that he has a long way to go if he wants to be a regular NFL starter, as he turned the ball over three times against the Saints defense.

New Orleans has a very good secondary and one of the best pass defenses in football, but so do the Carolina Panthers, which is not good news for Bagent if Justin Fields remains out with a thumb injury.

While the Panthers struggle in several areas and have only won one game this year, Carolina’s pass defense ranks in the NFL’s top five. The Panthers allow fewer than 180 passing yards per game, which doesn’t bode well for a Bears offense that has struggled to move the football all season.

Bears wide receiver DJ Moore had three superb games earlier in the season, but defenses have now started to key on him with a little more intent, and the result has been fewer than 60 yards and zero touchdowns in each of his last four games.

If the Carolina defense locks up Moore, Chicago won’t have another player who can get open with any consistency. This is a very similar problem to the one Carolina is having right now, and we could see several short drives and a lot of punts on Thursday night as a result.

As of this writing, there has been no confirmation as to whether Fields will be back for this game. He was limited in practice on Tuesday, and unless he can go through a practice at full speed in a hurry, he might remain out for Thursday’s game.

If so, Bagent would start again, and his performances so far have been a mix of good throws, some nice plays … and a few really bad ones, too.

While the Panthers’ pass defense is strong, Chicago’s ranks in the league’s bottom five, allowing almost 260 aerial yards per game. Bagent will be facing a far better unit than the one Young will see, and that could easily play a role in this game’s outcome.

Panthers vs. Bears Predictions and Pick

I prefer Carolina’s offense here against the Panthers defense. While I think Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent has potential in terms of his ability to make nice throws and find the end zone, Carolina boasts a far better unit on the back end than Chicago does.

Panthers QB Bryce Young should be able to lead a couple of scoring drives against a defense that lacks any real threat and allows a wealth of passing yardage. I don’t expect this to be a high-scoring game, and I think the total over/under line is well set, but the Panthers can win this one on the road and are likely the better team in a low-scoring matchup.

I’ll take the Panthers and the points, covering myself if it comes down to a field goal.

The Pick: Carolina Panthers +3.5 (-105)

When it comes to the over/under, any line below 40 always feels tough to embrace.

Chicago has covered the over in six of its nine games this year, including the only game with a line set below 40. Carolina was less successful in that regard, as the Panthers hit the under twice early in the year when the lines were set at 40.5 against Atlanta and 40 against New Orleans.

Both the Falcons and Saints have better defenses than what the Bears have, so I’m going to take the over in a game that might not be the cleanest, but could still feature some points. A defensive score is very possible, as are short-field turnovers. When picking the over in a low-scoring game, those factors could be the difference.

The Pick: Over 39.5 Points (-115)

Best NFL Player-Prop Bets: Panthers vs. Bears

Cole Kmet

Chicago tight end Cole Kmet has put together great back-to-back performances with Tyson Bagent at quarterback. He should continue to see work as the Bears’ No. 2 option when DJ Moore is unavailable.

Kmet had 55 receiving yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s game against New Orleans after catching passes for 79 yards against the Chargers one week earlier

While Carolina is great at defending against the pass, the Panthers are a very middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to stopping tight ends. Carolina has allowed opposing tight ends to average 6.3 receptions and 55 yards per game this season.

The Pick: Cole Kmet Over 36.5 Receiving Yards (-110)

Adam Thielen

Among all the players in this game, Carolina wide receiver Adam Thielen is by far the one most likely to make an impact. He has the most favorable matchup and should continue to see a high volume of targets, as well as a few big plays.

While he had a quiet day against the Colts last weekend, it was largely because his team had so much difficulty with the Indianapolis pass rush. Chicago’s newly acquired defensive end, Montez Sweat, could cause more problems for the Panthers, but I like Thielen to bounce back with 7+ catches, high-volume involvement, and another one of his big performances against this Bears secondary.

The Pick: Adam Thielen Over 70.5 Receiving Yards (-115)
