Time: 1:00: p.m. EST
Venue: FedEx Field — Landover, Maryland
TV Channel: FOX

The Arizona Cardinals have certainly got their work cut out in the 2023 NFL season, and their first matchup will be a road game against the Washington Commanders.

Washington are moving forward with Sam Howell as the starting QB in 2023, while Arizona will be forced to dive into the depth chart without Kyler Murray, at least for the first few weeks of the season and maybe more.

Washington has a young core, but they seem to be trending in the right direction going into this year. Arizona on the other hand are facing a real mountain to climb, having offloaded the majority of their top end talent while stripping the roster down to the very bones.

The future might be bright for the franchise with two first round draft picks and a lot of room for growth, but none of that capital is going to help them win right now. Let’s get into the matchup and make a couple of picks and predictions.

Cardinals vs Commanders Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NFL Odds Week 1

Moneyline: Arizona Cardinals +275, Washington Commanders -334
Spread: Cardinals +7.5 (-115), Commanders -7.5 (-106)
Total: Over/Under 38.5 points

Cardinals vs Commanders Preview

We’re now just days away from the opening game of the NFL season, and still have no idea who the starting quarterback is going to be for the Cardinals.

The franchise traded for Josh Dobbs just a few days ago, largely because he spent last season in Cleveland with Drew Petzing, who is now the offensive coordinator in Arizona.

Having been a member of the franchise for a matter of days, there’s now a good chance that Josh Dobbs starts on Sunday as the most experienced quarterback on the roster. The alternative is rookie Clayton Tune, who the franchise drafted in the 5th round out of the University of Houston. He played in the preseason and made a few plays, but there’s no telling if he’d be capable of leading a win in the regular season.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon was going viral this week for his ‘inspirational speech’, which didn’t exactly work wonders in firing up Cardinals fans for the season ahead, which is already expected to be a nightmare given the weaknesses on the roster and absence of Kyler Murray.

The team is lacking weapons too. It’s not as if an inexperienced quarterback can come in and lean on somebody like Deandre Hopkins. The only proven starters are Marquise Brown and veteran tight end Zack Ertz, outside of that there’s going to be targets up for grabs.

One potentially bright spark is rookie receiver Michael Wilson, who had all the talent of a first round draft pick but just lacked the production, having dealt with injuries in his college career at Stanford. He’s a bright kid, and a player who could really help the Cardinals early, as well as being a part of their long-term plan for the future.

Washington on the other hand are hoping to take a big step forwards in 2023 with former UNC Tar Heels quarterback Sam Howell under center.

The franchise wants to see what they’ve got in the young QB this season, giving him total control over the offense as the designated starter. Unlike the Cardinals, Washington’s offense is rich with pass catching talent, including second year talent Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel and tight end Logan Thomas.

The Commanders did suffer a blow in the preseason when star wideout Terry McLaurin went down with turf toe, an injury that can prove to be a nightmare during the football season as a lingering injury. If he does miss significant time, that might only enhance the potential for a major breakout year for Dotson, who managed 523 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022.

Defensively, Washington continues to pride themselves on a superb front seven, and former second overall pick Chase Young is expected to be a major contributor again this year after only featuring in three games at the back end of the 2022 season.

Cardinals vs Commanders Predictions & NFL Picks Week 1

This is a really tough test for the Cardinals. It just looks as though the odds are severely stacked against them, and you could make a good case for them being outmatched in just about every area of the field.

That doesn’t bode well for Arizona either, as the Commanders are likely one of the more beatable opponents they’re going to face this season.

I have Washington winning this one comfortably, but I will say that I much prefer the under on total points scored. Sam Howell will likely play a decent game, but it’s going to take time for him to uncover his favorite targets and those he feels he can find in the red zone, especially with McLaurin’s status up in the air.

Let's take the under on 38.5 points, anticipating a 17-10 victory for the Commanders.

The Pick: Under 38.5 Total Points (-120)

While it might not be a high scoring affair, I do feel really good about the Commanders winning this one.

Arizona have their work cut out. It’s a new coaching staff, a new scheme, a new quarterback and there are also new pieces on the offensive line. All of those things are going to need time to gel, and with Montez Sweat and Chase Young bearing down on them out of the gate in Week 1, the Cardinals might be in for a long afternoon.

Washington should be winning this game, but the spread is well placed at 7.5. To avoid heartbreak when they win by seven, we’ll just go with the moneyline here.

The Pick: Washington Commanders to Win (-330)

Best NFL Player Prop Bets: Sunday Afternoon Week 1

James Conner

Looking at this Cardinals offense, you have to imagine that James Conner is going to get a tremendous amount of work this season, both on the ground and in the receiving game.

With either a fifth-round rookie or a veteran who has been in the building for less than two weeks starting the game at quarterback, Conner should be expecting a lot of check downs, screens and most importantly, hand offs.

The next question is whether he can get enough space to do anything with those touches, but I’d imagine with the volume of work he’ll at least be able to clear his combined rushing and receiving total for the matchup.

The Pick: James Conner Over # Combined Rushing and Receiving Yards (odds)

Jahan Dotson

The Cardinals have a great combination at safety in Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson, but I’m far from convinced about their corners, and more importantly, the lack of depth at the position.

They lost Byron Murphy in free agency over the summer, and will now depend on Marco Wilson and Antonio Hamilton, who they brought back after a decent contribution in 2022.

Regardless, the unit looks a little weak, and that might be more because there’s very little depth to it than anything else.

Terry McLaurin is banged up and might end up sitting this one out entirely, so all signs point towards several targets and a potentially big day for Jahan Dotson.

The Pick: Jahan Dotson Over # Receiving Yards (odds)
