Commanders vs Eagles Preview

Writers like myself are running out of adjectives to describe the 8-0 Philadelphia Eagles at this point in the season. They toyed with their prey on Thursday Night Football in Week 9, going into halftime tied with the Texans on the road before they came out in the second half and handled their business.

Jalen Hurts played a very efficient game, completing 21 of 27 passes for 243 yards and two passing touchdowns. This time around it was tight end Dallas Goedert taking over the game, and when he plays like that he is one of the best in the league. He was unstoppable against Houston, and is now over 500 receiving yards for the season, the second best contribution in the Eagles passing game.

AJ Brown and Dallas Goedert combined makes for one of the toughest duos to cover in the league, and that’s without considering the need to cover DeVonta Smith. The Eagles are on fire offensively, and Nick Sirianni deserves major props for what he’s currently achieving with this team.

The Commanders are in a slightly different situation, trialling Taylor Heinicke as the starting quarterback once again. Washington had won their first two games since making the switch to Heinicke, but they fumbled what should have been a win against Minnesota last weekend.

Washington is a team that is struggling to find rhythm. The offense looks like it’s been patched together week to week with no consistent plan. Curtis Samuel is turning out to be a bright spark, but the Commanders struggled to protect Taylor Heinicke all afternoon and the run game was largely nullified by Minnesota.

Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson totaled 24 carries split almost evenly, and managed just 3.4 yards per carry on the day.

Commanders vs Eagles Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - MNF Odds Week 10

Moneyline: Philadelphia Eagles -500, Washington Commanders +375
Spread: Philadelphia Eagles -10.5, Washington Commanders +10.5
Total: Over/Under 43.5

Monday night's game marks the second and final regular season meeting between the Eagles and the Commanders, and it was Philadelphia who took game one in a convincing win. The Eagles beat the Commanders 24-8 in their own backyard in what remains Washington's worst scoring performance of the season so far.

Carson Wentz was the starting quarterback at the time, and despite throwing for over 200 yards on the day, he failed to find a receiver in the end zone all afternoon. The Commanders struggled to run the ball too, with Antonio Gibson only able to pick up 38 yards on 12 carries as the team's primary running back.

Fast forward eight weeks and there’s a new starting quarterback facing Philadelphia the second time around. Say what you want about Taylor Heinicke, but I’m not sure I’ve seen a more passionate man on a football field. The team always seems to play harder for Heinicke, and if the Commanders could give him a little more time in the pocket, they would have beaten the Vikings on Sunday.

Heinicke has done a good job distributing the football and the Commanders seem to be in slightly better shape for having him. They’re 2-1 in the three games he’s started, and had it not been for a momentum shifting interception in the fourth quarter against the Vikings, that could and likely should be a 3-0 record.

My concern is whether they are able to keep up with the Eagles and their ability to consistently score points. The Commanders rank 26th in points per game, averaging 17, while Philly are the number two team in the league, picking up over 28 points a game on average.

The Eagles were stunted a little by the Houston Texans in the first half in Week 9, but when they switch it on and figure out their weaknesses on the fly, there’s no stopping them. Betting the Eagles to cover at half time against Houston was a great bet. They just know how to overcome their obstacles, and there’s many very good reasons they’re 8-0.Commanders vs Eagles Predictions and MNF Picks Week 10

Washington is one of the teams in the NFL that relies on stellar defense to win football games. There are questions about the identity of the offense right now, and rightly so. Washington has already shown that they don’t believe Taylor Heinicke is the long-term solution, not only bringing in Carson Wentz, but drafting Sam Howell as a chaser.

It just feels a little thrown together week to week. Backyard football, almost. It’s the Commanders' defense that is holding the fort and keeping the team in games. In their last five outings, Washington has allowed 21 points or less, including a vist from Derrick Henry and the Titans and Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. Of those five games, the Commanders have won three, but can they keep the Eagles at bay with the same level of execution?

This is a tough call. The Commanders haven’t lost against the spread since Heinicke took over, winning two and tying on the third on Sunday, but they’re 4-4-1 ATS for the season.

While I toyed with the idea of Washington keeping this a low scoring game, and I believe they will to an extent, I still don’t think it will be enough to cover. I’ll back the Eagles at -10.5

The Pick: Philadelphia Eagles -10.5 (-110)

Philadelphia’s defense has caused some clutch turnovers at pivotal points in the game multiple times this season. The secondary had two takeaways in the second half against the Houston Texans, with Chauncey Gardner-Johnson getting yet another interception and now leading the league with five, and Darius Slay picking up the other one.

Taylor Heinicke is not afraid to try and push the ball down the field, and it sometimes gets him in trouble. I think it’s inevitable that he throws at least one pick against Philadelphia, and that leads to my reasoning to pick the over for the game.

I think Philly pick up a couple of takeaways, resulting in scoring drives and short-field opportunities, and if chasing the game, the Commanders will just start slinging, likely resulting in at least one additional score.

I can see the game being in the ballpark of a 31-17 win for the Eagles, and I feel good about backing them to carry this game to the over, with a little help from Washington. The Eagles are 5-3 covering overs this season so far this year, but have hit in four of their last five games.

The Pick: Philadelphia Eagles vs Washington Commanders Over 42.5 (-110)
