The unbeaten Washington Huskies have blown everyone away this year. They stormed out to a 12-0 regular-season record before upsetting Oregon as major underdogs in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The Huskies have both exceeded expectations and produced some of the most electrifying offensive football in the country this season. They are once again underdogs entering the College Football Playoff, but they certainly have enough talent to provide another shocking result.

In the second of the two semifinal games on Jan. 1, Washington will face a Texas Longhorns team that made an early-season statement by defeating head coach Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has held his job for three years now, improving each season on his way to his team’s first College Football Playoff appearance this year. This game, which is also the 90th annual Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, involves two teams who are out to prove that they belong on the big stage. Which one will move on to the coveted championship game against the winner of the Alabama-Michigan matchup?

Texas at Washington Preview

Washington entered the Pac-12 Championship Game on Dec. 1 as a nine-point underdog against the Oregon Ducks. Their enthralling 34-31 upset victory in that matchup was their second win over the Ducks this season, as they laughed in the face of a disrespectful pregame point spread.

That championship-game win over the Ducks was an incredible all-around offensive performance by the Huskies. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. threw for 319 yards, and running back Dillon Johnson carried the ball 28 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receivers Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze each topped 100 yards in a game that saw all the Huskies' biggest stars make their presence felt.

A performance like that one wasn’t out of the ordinary for Washington’s passing attack. Penix leads the nation with 4,218 passing yards, which includes 33 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. His Heisman-nominated season resulted in elite production from a talented receiver corps. Odunze leads the way with 1,428 yards, which is second in the nation in 2023. He is backed up by another 1,000-yard receiver in Ja’Lynn Polk, and the duo have 21 touchdown catches between them. Odunze, Polk, and Penix have made this a truly special season for Washington, which leads the nation with 343.8 passing yards per game.

Huskies fans should be excited by the fact that Texas, their playoff semifinal opponent, is ranked only 87th in the country when it comes to passing yards conceded per game. The Longhorns have a weakness in their passing defense, which makes Washington a matchup nightmare for them.

Texas does, however, benefit from having one of the better defensive lines in the country. The ’Horns limit opposing offenses to just 2.9 yards per carry, but that might not really matter against Washington. Only six FBS teams have rushed the ball fewer times than Washington this year. Penix and Co. are more than happy to abandon the run and let it rip through the air.

If this game comes down to a shootout, which its over/under betting line of 63.5 points suggests, then the Longhorns will be able to counter the Huskies by unleashing some offensive weapons of their own. Junior wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell are both projected to go high in the 2024 NFL Draft if they declare for it after the season. Worthy has the edge on the receiving-yardage front, posting 969 yards in comparison to Mitchell’s 813. However, Mitchell is the player with more touchdowns, doubling up Worthy by registering 10 scores.

If all that offensive power isn’t enough to contend with, the Huskies will also have to worry about Longhorns tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders. He has caught 39 passes for 607 yards this season and has already surpassed the 600-yard mark in each of his first two years of college football. The dynamic trio of Worthy, Mitchell, and Sanders headline a deep receiving group that also benefits from a juicy Sugar Bowl matchup, because the Huskies’ defense is ranked only 119th when it comes to passing yards conceded per game.

Of course, we can’t get this far into a game preview without mentioning Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. The sophomore has registered 3,161 passing yards, 21 TD passes, and just six interceptions this year. In addition to a star-studded group of receivers, he also benefits from having running back Jonathon Brooks in the backfield. Brooks has averaged 6.1 yards per carry this season -- rushing for a total of 1,139 yards and 10 scores. He also has 286 receiving yards.

There will certainly be an abundance of offensive talent on the field in this year’s Sugar Bowl game. Both Washington and Texas have exceeded expectations in getting to this point, and it will be fascinating to see which one group of players can keep a lid on their emotions and register what should be an unforgettable victory.

Texas vs. Washington Prediction and Pick

We can expect to see fireworks in this game, and it could simply come down to whichever defense gets an important stop when needed. I am instead going to look at the quarterbacks to determine which team has the edge. We know that both pass defenses can be picked on, but it is Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. whom I trust the most.

This year’s Heisman Trophy runner-up has been incredible, and he benefits from five years of college experience. He leads the country in passing yards, and I expect him to get his team over the line in the 2023 Sugar Bowl.

The Pick: Washington Huskies +4 (-110)

It is easy to see why the projected points total is high for this game. The Sugar Bowl will see two of college football’s best passing offenses go up against two poor pass defenses. It should be a back-and-forth affair, and I see no reason why it won’t storm past the over. Buckle up, this one could be explosive!
