Tennessee vs Alabama Preview

The CBS game of the week this week will feature the Tennessee Volunteers traveling to Bryant-Denny Stadium to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Vols are 5-1 but yet to win in a road game atmosphere, while the Crimson Tide are 6-1 with one home loss.

The Tide fell to the Texas Longhorns at home back in Week 2, but it's fair to say that the roster was in a much worse place than it is now in Week 8.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe was struggling early, that much was very clear. And there were questions about whether he’d be ready leading right up to the start of the college football season.

Milroe has certainly grown into the role and Nick Saban said on the Pat McAfee show this week that his teammates have gained confidence in him. And the team has been able to make some really explosive plays as a result.

Is the passing attack as glowing and consistent as it was with Tua Tagovailoa or Mac Jones or Bryce Young? Not at all. But the Tide also don’t have wide receivers who have proven themselves at the level of the likes of DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle.

Fourth-year Jermaine Burton had a breakout game in Week 6 with nine catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns against Texas A&M, and he now leads the team with 446 yards and four touchdowns. Outside of him, there isn’t a receiver who has reached 200 yards on the season.

The Crimson Tide are not winning games with methodical drives. They’re winning because they move the football slowly and without a clear game plan and then throw a touchdown deep down the field in one major splash play.

Alabama’s run game hasn’t been great this year either, and trying to establish the run against this very impressive Volunteers defensive front just isn’t going to happen. Winning this game will come down to Jalen Milroe beating the Tennessee rush and throwing the football downfield.

Tennessee currently ranks fourth in the country in sacks per game. James Pearce Jr. has been superb. He has 32 QB pressures and seven sacks in what has been a major breakout year for the second-year talent, and Tyler Baron has put up five sacks of his own, just one shy of his career high from back in 2021.

Alabama’s offensive line has been a mess this year and that doesn’t fall favorably against this Tennessee defensive line.

The Vols defense came up big for them against Texas A&M, forcing two interceptions from Max Johnson and holding A&M to 13 points to cover for a very poor day from quarterback Joe Milton.

Milton threw for just 100 yards while going 11/22 throwing the football, and threw an interception into the endzone that very nearly cost Tennessee the game.

The key for the Vols this week will be their run game. Alabama managed 23 rushing yards against Texas A&M. 23. That’s it. Well, Tennessee faced that same defense just last week and posted 237 rushing yards.

Jaylen Wright ran the football 19 times for 136 yards supported by Jabari Small and Dylan Sampson, and the Vols were able to lean on their ground game and go back to it time after time as the pass game struggled all afternoon.

Tennessee vs Alabama Picks and Predictions

I really like the under for this game. Both offenses have had their struggles and will likely continue to face those same struggles at the weekend.

Expect to see Jalen Milroe running from pressure all afternoon and likely getting hit a lot during this game, and Joe Milton will face a sturdy Alabama secondary that ranks inside the top 20 in passing yards allowed right next to the Volunteers defense.

Neither of these teams are giving up over 200 yards through the air, neither have highly successful consistent offenses, and I’m backing the under despite it being a total that is less than each team scored in last season's matchup.

This is a very different game, and one that will be controlled by dominant defense.

The Pick: Under 48.5 Points (-110)

I think Tennessee takes this one, but only if the offense is able to take care of the football.

Tennessee has a stronger running game, relying on multiple players to contribute effectively. Meanwhile, Alabama can’t run the ball, so if Jalen Milroe gets into trouble back there he’s going to have to keep on throwing the football.

The Vols defensive line will be the star of the show and put up yet another enticing performance, giving the offense the chance to establish the run, control possession and ultimately close out the game.

The Pick: Tennessee Volunteers to win (+275)
