Penn State at Ohio State Preview

The matchup between the Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes is one of the biggest games of the season, sure to attract college football fans and NFL scouts’ unwavering attention. It features two teams that are loaded with talent, led by two young, inexperienced quarterbacks facing off against two of the best defences in the college game.

With Penn State giving up the second-fewest points per game (8), and Ohio State slotting in behind them in third (9.7), both of these first-year starting quarterbacks will be tested in ways they have yet to experience. Add in a raucous Columbus crowd, and this game could very well come down to whichever quarterback handles the moment better. In closely fought games like this, a turnover can help a team slip by their opponent by the smallest of margins. Which quarterback will hold their nerve and which defense can create the game-changing moment?

Up to this point, both quarterbacks have been good at protecting the ball. Both Drew Allar (65.2%) and Kyle McCord (64.1%) have similar completion percentages, with McCord throwing for more yardage, posting 1,651 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception this year. Despite having less yardage, Allar edges McCord in the other statistics, throwing for 12 touchdowns and no interceptions in 2023.

For Drew Allar, this will be just his third away start. He will have to contend with ferocious attention from the Ohio crowd and a Buckeye defense that just held Purdue quarterback Hudson Card to only 126 passing yards. It was a nightmare day for Card, who was sacked 11 times and completed just 13 of his 32 passing attempts. JT Tuimoloau was the main problem for Purdue, producing an outrageous 20-pressure, three-sack performance, with both Michael Hall and Jack Sawyer chipping in with two each as well. The Penn State offense is a completely different challenge, but it still serves as a great confidence booster to take into such an important Big Ten game.

Whilst unsettling Drew Allar will be an important aspect of the game, the Buckeyes will also need to keep an eye on the Nittany Lions running backs, Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. The duo have combined for 9 touchdowns this year and have taken a lot of pressure off Drew Allar. Penn State are averaging 203 rushing yards per game, and limiting that will be a key factor for Ohio State.

In contrast, the running game has not been something that the Buckeyes have been able to rely on of late, as they average 70 yards per game less than Penn State on the ground. Injuries to TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams have made life harder on the ground recently, but head coach Ryan Day is hopeful that he will have a full-strength squad out there.

The primary focus for the Penn State defense will be Marvin Harrison Jr. The star wideout has topped 100 yards in all but one of his games so far, securing 604 yards and 5 touchdowns already. This is his toughest test to date though, creating a box office showdown with Penn State’s talented cornerbacks. There are not many secondaries that can match up against Marvin Harrison and the Ohio State passing attack, but the Nittany Lions will fancy their chances.

Penn State cornerbacks Kalen King and Daequan Hardy, and their safeties, Dominic DeLuca and Kevin Winston Jr have the ability to not just limit the Ohio State passing game, but to come out on top. The Nittany Lions have given up the fewest passing yards in the country, creating a true strength-on-strength matchup that should be fascinating to watch this weekend.

Penn State vs Ohio State Prediction and Pick

This is one of the hardest games of the year to pick, with both teams matching up very well against the other. Penn State will fancy their chances of limiting the Buckeye’s underwhelming rush attack and winning their matchup against Kyle McCord and Marvin Harrison Jr. But Ohio’s defense is also playing like one of the best in the country, rounding into form as the season has progressed and peaking last week with 11 sacks against Purdue.

In what promises to be a closely fought affair, I will back Ohio States’ playmakers to help edge them over the line, helped by a packed Ohio Stadium to give them some extra motivation. Look for Marvin Harrison Jr. and JT Tuimoloau to step up again for their team in the Buckeyes’ biggest game of the year.

The Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes -200

Two of the top three defenses, on a points allowed per game basis, make this a relatively straightforward 'under' recommendation this week. Both teams will be fully aware of what is at stake in this game, with playoff hopes already on the line. This one should be a low-scoring affair that could be swung either way by one big play. Bet the under and enjoy watching two teams who know that every yard is crucial in this one.

The Pick: Penn State Nittany Lions vs Ohio State Buckeyes Under 45.5 -110
