Oregon State vs. Notre Dame Preview

Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish will be hoping the third time’s the charm when they compete in this year’s Sun Bowl after having lost their two previous bowl games against the Oregon State Beavers. Of course, those other clashes were played 19 and 22 years ago, so there isn’t much we can read into them, even though one happened to be the second-worst bowl-game defeat in Notre Dame history.

It has been a good year for the Fighting Irish in 2023, but one that was underwhelming by the program’s own standards. After going five straight years with double-digit win totals under former head coach Brian Kelly, Notre Dame has only managed nine wins in each of its two years with Marcus Freeman at the helm.

Notre Dame’s expectations were high entering the season, as six-year FBS veteran Sam Hartman joined the team to bring some experience and quality to the quarterback position. He has had a solid year, passing for 2,689 yards and 24 touchdowns. He has also indicated his intention to play in the Sun Bowl, which is good news for Notre Dame.

Hartman has been spreading the ball around for the Fighting Irish, as seven of his receivers broke 200 yards but none went higher than 484. Six different Irish players have caught more than two TD passes, and freshman Jaden Greathouse has led the way with five.

The star of the show on offense has been running back Audric Estime, who has rushed for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns. His excellent season has sent his 2024 NFL Draft stock sky-high, so he might decide to sit this game and prepare for the draft rather than risk an injury. Oregon State has been the nation’s 17th-best team at stopping the run this year, so if Estime opts to sit, it would hamper Notre Dame’s potential to win.

One player that will definitely miss the Sun Bowl is Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who has entered the transfer portal. To make matters worse, Beavers backup quarterback Aidan Chiles has also entered the transfer portal, leaving OSU to play its third-string quarterback.

Oregon State’s top running back, Damien Martinez, and second-leading wide receiver, Anthony Gould, will also miss the game. Right tackle Taliese Fuaga rounds out the quartet of Beavers offensive players who will not play, so it is easy to see why the Fighting Irish are heavily favored in this one. Notre Dame’s defense has allowed college football’s 11th-fewest points this season, and it will be going up against a group of Beavers missing their top two quarterbacks as well as starters at running back, wide receiver, and right tackle.

Oregon State vs. Notre Dame Prediction and Pick

It is hard to see a way for Oregon State to steal a win here. The Beavers will be heading to El Paso without several key players, including their top two quarterbacks. Notre Dame is a very good team, and it’s even more important that they will have sixth-year starting quarterback Sam Hartman in their lineup.

I see this game becoming a miserable end to Oregon State’s season. Give me the Fighting Irish to cover.

The Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish -6.5 (-110)

Missouri vs. Ohio State Preview

It might come as a surprise to see Ohio State as the underdog in this year’s Cotton Bowl, but both a strong season from the Missouri Tigers and Buckeyes star quarterback Kyle McCord’s decision to enter the transfer portal have made this one a fascinating game. Junior wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and junior running back TreVeyon Henderson are Ohio State’s top playmakers on offense, but both might be entering the 2024 NFL Draft, so it is unlikely that we’ll see them here. Of course, both players still officially claim to be undecided about going pro.

Even if Harrison and Henderson declare for the draft, there are enough stars on Ohio State’s roster to make this game interesting. Junior wide receiver Emeka Egbuka will also be a high selection whenever he enters the draft, and Cade Stover is one of the better tight ends in college football. If other Buckeyes sit, this game will allow freshman receiver Carnell Tate to show what he can do, and senior Chip Trayanum could be a very useful fill-in at running back.

The biggest question will be at quarterback now that McCord has opted to leave Columbus. Will it be a rotation of sophomore Devin Brown and freshman Lincoln Kienholz? If so, it would be a huge opportunity for either one of these players to kickstart his college career. Missouri’s defense presents a tough test, and the Tigers will be eager to topple Ohio State on a big stage.

Missouri’s football program has enjoyed a brilliant year under head coach Eli Drinkwitz. This has been the school’s first winning season since 2018 and the first time the Tigers have registered a double-digit victory total since 2014. Prior to the season, many doubted whether Missouri would even reach a bowl game, but it has proven the experts wrong by finishing with a No. 9 ranking

Tigers quarterback Brady Cook has passed for over 3,000 yards this season -- helped out by a fantastic performance from Luther Burden, who caught 83 passes for 1,197 yards and eight touchdowns. If both Burden and OSU’s Harrison play, viewers will be treated to two of the college game’s best receivers in a head-to-head matchup.

The other Missouri star to watch out for is running back Cody Schrader. He has rushed for 1,489 yards and 13 touchdowns this year, capping off the regular season with a 217-yard game against Arkansas. Ohio State has an excellent defense, but the Buckeyes were better against the pass than the run. Schrader will be one of the keys to this game.

Missouri vs. Ohio State Prediction

Missouri has forced people to take notice this year. The Tigers have played brilliantly and were rewarded with the AP’s No. 9 ranking as well as the opportunity to knock off a Big Ten powerhouse. They will be very pumped for this game, and should come in more motivated than a disappointed Ohio State team missing its starting quarterback.

With both Marvin Harrison Jr. and TreVeyon Henderson potentially deciding to sit this one out for OSU, I am going to opt for Missouri here. The Tigers will be eager to show how good they are on the big stage in prime time.

The Pick: Missouri Tigers to win (-140)

Ole Miss vs. Penn State Preview

This is an intriguing clash between two schools that had solid regular seasons but fell short against the biggest teams in their conference.

The defense stood out for the Penn State Nittany Lions this season. They gave up just 230.9 total yards per game – the fewest allowed by any FBS team in 2023. Penn State led the country in sacks and held both Michigan and Ohio State under their scoring averages this year. The Lions, however, might be without a couple of stars during bowl season, because junior cornerback Kalen King and junior defensive end Chop Robinson both plan to enter the NFL draft and might choose to miss this game rather than risk getting hurt.

PSU sophomore quarterback Drew Allar looks set to lead the Nittany Lions in this Peach Bowl matchup. He threw for a modest 2,336 passing yards in 2023 -- posting 23 touchdowns against just one interception. His ability to protect the ball is one of the main reasons Penn State was able to win 10 games this season as a team that had the nation’s third-fewest giveaways on the year.

Allar was supported fantastically by sophomore running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton, who both went over 700 rushing yards this season. Since the Rebels give up four yards per carry, Penn State’s RBs should be a key to the game.

The Ole Miss Rebels also have 10 wins in 2023, and the program is aiming to achieve its first ever 11-win season. Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart, who has thrown 20 TD passes and five interceptions on the year, is currently just 15 yards short of his first 3,000-yard season. He was unable to pass for a touchdown only twice this season -- against Alabama and Georgia -- so he will be hoping to get at least one here against the outstanding Penn State defense.

Dart has been supported by a very talented group of receivers this year in Tre Harris, Dayton Wade, and Jordan Watkins. All three have caught passes for more than 700 yards in 2023. However, they are all seniors, so it will be interesting to see if any of them decide not to play in this game. Ole Miss will need a good group of pass-catchers to challenge a Nittany Lions’ secondary that has given up the nation’s fourth-fewest yards through the air this year.

Ole Miss vs. Penn State Prediction and Pick

The Peach Bowl should be a very exciting game between two teams with 10-2 records. The Ole Miss Rebels will be desperate to register their first ever 11-win season, but I think the Penn State defense is just too good for them. Even without their stars on defense, the Nittany Lions are a well-disciplined and professional outfit.

PSU’s defense might be the best offensive or defensive unit on the field, and Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar won’t give the Ole Miss defense a sniff of a turnover. Penn State should earn a Peach Bowl victory here.

The Pick: Penn State Nittany Lions -3.5 (+100)

Georgia vs. Florida State Preview

Everyone was talking about the Florida State Seminoles by the end of Selection Sunday, when four teams were chosen for the College Football Playoff. An undefeated season and ACC Championship apparently weren’t enough to warrant a playoff appearance for FSU, which  got the consolation prize of an Orange Bowl matchup with Georgia – another team that had hoped to be playing for the national title.

Indeed, heading into the 2023 season, many experts felt the two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs would be ending their season with a third straight national championship. However, a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game cost Georgia its No. 1 ranking -- dropping the Bulldogs (now No. 6) out of the playoff picture. There is no doubt that Georgia is the favorite is in this game, but the Seminoles will be as motivated as ever to prove they deserved a playoff berth.

The quarterback position will be the key for Florida State. After starter Jordan Travis suffered a broken leg on Nov. 18, Tate Rodemaker stepped into the No. 1 role. Rodemaker, however, suffered an injury of his own, which led the team to rely on third-stringer Brock Glenn. A healthy Rodemaker’s presence will be crucial if the Seminoles are to have any chance at winning the Orange Bowl.

Even if Rodemaker plays, winning won't be easy for Florida State. The Seminoles’ top two receivers, Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, are both entering the 2024 NFL Draft and could skip this game as a result. Coleman and Wilson have led the team in receiving with over 600 yards apiece. FSU’s next best pass-catchers are tight ends Jaheim Bell (503 yards) and Kyle Morlock (255 yards).

For Georgia, the early indication is that junior quarterback Carson Beck should be available to play. He has completed 72.4 percent of his passes this year -- throwing for 3,738 yards and 22 touchdowns. Georgia scored the nation’s ninth-most points per game in 2023 with Beck at QB, but he might have to play this game without his top receiving options, tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Ladd McConkey. Both players will be entering the 2024 NFL Draft, and Bowers is considered the top tight end prospect. Neither will necessarily be willing to risk injury by playing in the Orange Bowl.

There is still enough talent left over for the Bulldogs to make life tough for the Seminoles. Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and Dominic Lovett registered the most yardage by Georgia wide receivers this year, with both breaking 500 yards. They will need to be in top form to get the better of Florida State’s elite defense. The Seminoles are giving up just 16.2 points per game this year, which is good enough for the nation’s No. 8 ranking in that category.

The Bulldogs' offense received a boost when senior running back Kendall Milton committed to playing in the Orange Bowl. He has averaged 6.1 yards per carry this year for a total of 686 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Georgia vs. Florida State Predictions and Pick

I would love the Florida State Seminoles to bounce back from their playoff rejection by showing up the formerly top-seeded Bulldogs, but I just don’t see it happening. The Bulldogs had that No. 1 ranking for a reason, and they will also be frustrated over missing the College Football Playoff.

Add in the fact that Florida State will be relying on an injured backup quarterback, and I see this one being a romp for Georgia. I will take the Bulldogs to cover.

The Pick: Georgia Bulldogs -14 (-110)
