Nobody will ever rank last year’s NCAA championship game as a classic. Even the folks in the ‘Nutmeg State’ who were elated with the outcome would acknowledge that the 76-59 outcome in the final game was never all that interesting after UConn opened a 16-point lead with 3:10 left in the first half.

Although San Diego State got within five, UConn scored 16 of the final 20 points to crush whatever hopes the Aztecs had of defeating a team that was clearly head-and-shoulders above everyone else.

Well, coach Bobby Hurley has his team back in the Sweet Sixteen after they defeated No. 16 Stetson by 39 and No. 9 Northwestern by 17, the latter game being led by senior guard Tristen Newton’s 20 points and 10 assists.

Hurley has this year’s team super-stoked again, and it is led by two players who are considered likely lottery picks: Guard Stephon Castle, a freshman, and sophomore center Donovan Clingan.

San Diego State has only one double-digit scorer, senior power forward Jaedon LeDee who averaged 21.5 points per game. He will be the singular focus of UConn’s defense.

The Big East has all three of its teams still competing in the Sweet 16, and all three – UConn, Marquette and Creighton – should be able to get into the Elite Eight, with Creighton likely to have the toughest time against Tennessee.

UConn has not played a close game since defeating St. John’s 95-80 in the semifinals of the Big East tournament, and its last loss was March 15 against Creighton. That was preceded by a 14-game winning streak. You would not be out of your mind to suggest that this year’s Huskies are even better than the Huskies who rolled through the NCAA Tournament last year without playing a close game.
