The basketball world took the day off for Thanksgiving and ceded the day to the NFL and families who watch football together after eating turkey. By Friday evening, all the pro football will be finished by dinnertime (since the Jets and Dolphins have a 3 p.m. ET start time), and folks who prefer NBA basketball will control the night.

We have a very interesting season on our hands, and the Western Conference standings show the Minnesota Timberwolves in first place and the Oklahoma City Thunder in second. Part of the reason for this is that the defending champion Denver Nuggets have gone 1-3 during a five-game road trip that ends tonight in Houston.

The championship futures markets have the T-Wolves at +2500 and the Thunder at +6000 to win the NBA title in 2024, so the state of the standings on the day after Thanksgiving is not considered an accurate foreshadowing of what will happen in the spring. Be that as it may, these standings reflect the fact that some teams are playing much better than others, and we shall factor that into our ’capping for Friday’s games.
