NBA Player Props for Friday, Feb 10th: Cavaliers vs Pelicans

The Cleveland Cavaliers travel to New Orleans to face the Pelicans on Friday night whilst currently on a four-game win streak. The Pelicans come into the game having snapped a ten-game losing streak with three straight wins against the LA Lakers, the Sacramento Kings and the Atlanta Hawks.

The Cavs are currently fourth in the East and playing some of the league's best defense, while the Pelicans sit seventh in the West, trying to hold on to a playoff spot until Zion Williamson returns to the starting five.

Cavaliers vs Pelicans Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers come into their road game against the Pelicans having shut down the Detroit Pistons in their last game out. The Cavs won 113-85 with a superb defensive performance stifling the Pistons at every turn.

Saddiq Bey had been one of the Pistons best outlets in recent weeks with 20+ points in four of his previous seven games. The Cavs held him to just seven on the night, shooting 1-6 in field goals and 1-4 from three.

With the trade deadline now in the rear-view mirror, Cleveland’s roster is unchanged. The Cavs have reliable scorers across the starting five as well as some of the best defense in the league.

The Cavs are allowing the third least field goal attempts per game in the NBA and are tied for the least three-point attempts along with the Dallas Mavericks. They suffocate their opposition, rarely giving up easy looks, and rotate extremely effectively on the defensive end of the floor.

Cleveland might not be one of the league's highest scoring teams, but they don’t need to be when they’re playing so well on defense. The Cavs have allowed an average of 100 points per game in their last 10, the league's best performance.

The New Orleans Pelicans have strong scoring outlets even with Zion out of the lineup. C.J. McCollum averaged 24.6 points per game in January and has had 20+ in his last three so far in February too. The Pels shooting guard has had support from Brandon Ingram in recent games, with the forward starting to find form again after returning from a two-month absence due to a toe injury.

Ingram has led the Pels in scoring in three of their last four games, including a 35-point night against the LA Lakers last weekend.

New Orleans perimeter defense is strong, which might mean the Cavs force more of the game inside to Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley on Friday night. Either way, this is likely to be a well-earned night of scoring for both sides, with defense playing a key role in the outcome.

Cavaliers vs Pelicans Injury Report

The New Orleans Pelicans released their injury report on Thursday afternoon, shortly after the trade deadline. The report includes a new addition, Devonte' Graham (pending trade), who is listed as out. Four other players on the team are still out due to injury, including Dyson Daniels (right ankle sprain), E.J. Liddell (recovering from a right knee ACL injury, and Zion Williamson (right hamstring strain).

The Cleveland side also has several players listed as out, including Ricky Rubio (left knee ACL recovery), and Dylan Windler (right ankle sprain).

Best New Orleans Pelicans Player Prop Bets Tonight: Friday, Feb 10tBrandon Ingram - Points Total

Brandon Ingram has been starting to find his rhythm again after missing an extensive period of playing time. The Pelicans forward missed two months from late November to late January with a toe contusion, only returning to the lineup on January 26th.

Since returning to the team, Ingram is shooting at a higher volume than he was back in November, taking an average of 24 shot attempts so far in February. With Zion out of the lineup Ingram is getting more looks and has capitalized on those opportunities of late with an average of 30.3 points per game in his three appearances so far this month. He’ll now face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night, boasting one of the league's toughest defenses.

The Cavs are a top five defense in opposition field goal percentage, and they allow the least number of threes per game in the league. Cleveland boasts the NBAs best defensive rating this season, and with the Pelicans missing Zion, plenty of that focus will be attributed to limiting the shooting opportunities for Brandon Ingram.

In their last game out, Cleveland allowed Bojan Bogdanovic of the Detroit Pistons to go just 5-18 from the floor for a 15-point night, with the small forward averaging over 21 points per game this season.

It’s good to see Ingram getting back into his groove, but I like the under on the 25.5-point line tonight.

The Pick: Brandon Ingram Under 25.5 Points (-120)

C.J. McCollum - Assists Total

The New Orleans Pelicans are averaging 123.5 points per game so far in February, with two of those four games resulting in 130+ points. That’s not going to happen against the Cavs.

In fact, in the last ten games no team is allowing less points in the NBA. Cleveland is giving up an average 100 points per game, and with that, the least assists in the NBA, both in the last ten games and throughout the season.

Cleveland is so quick to close out open looks, almost always forcing a dribble or an additional pass. They’re a top three team in points in the paint, and no team is allowing less three-point shots per game this season.

So, while McCollum has hit a seven-assist total twice in his last four games, that doesn’t translate well to this game. I feel confident in the under 5.5 on this one, trusting the Cavs defense to have another strong night. I would happily back the under on total points in this game.

The Pick: C.J. McCollum Under 5.5 Assists (-110)

Best Cleveland Cavaliers Player Prop Bets Tonight: Friday, Feb 10th, 2023

Donovan Mitchell - Points Total

Donovan Mitchell’s under 26.5 against the Pacers the other night felt like an easy win. The Cavs just don’t need him to be shooting 30 points a game to win.

Cleveland’s offense is so well balanced between perimeter shooting from Garland, Mitchell and Okoro and inside contributions from Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. In the Pacers game, all five starters had between 17 and 24 points apiece.

Mitchell’s over/under line is still floating too high. He’s scored more than 21 points just once in his last eight games, and the Pelicans are one of the league's better teams against opposition backcourts.

In the last 10 games New Orleans have ranked in the top six in opposition three-point percentage, which is important against somebody like Donovan Mitchell who shoots a high volume of threes at around 30%. Mitchell has taken 19 threes in his last two games, with five makes. The Pels are one of the league's better teams in perimeter defense, which is a favorable matchup against somebody like Mitchell who might shoot a lot of threes, but not necessarily at the highest conversion.

The Pick: Donovan Mitchell Under 26.5 Points (-120)

Darius Garland - Three Pointers Total

While Mitchell is more of a volume three-point shooter, Darius Garland takes the better shots for the Cavs, and he’s a high percentage shooter from behind the arc.

Garland has shot 62% from three in his three games so far in February and made at least four threes in each of those games. Garland is averaging 41.5% from deep so far this season, and I like the odds in seeing him make at least three tonight, even against the Pels defense.

It is more probable for Garland, among the Cavs guards, to score over 30 points, and if he attempts 6 or more three-pointers, I am confident that he will make a minimum of three of those shots.

The Pick: Darius Garland Over 2.5 Three Pointers Made (-145)
