Newcastle looked completely unbeatable in its season opener, crushing Aston Villa 5-1 in a thrilling start to its 2023-24 Premier League season. Week 2 brought the team back down to earth with a 1-0 road loss at Manchester City, but Newcastle essentially managed to hold its own against an opponent favored to win the league this season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool came from behind to beat Bournemouth over the weekend after allowing a goal within the first five minutes at home. Jurgen Klopp’s team eventually emerged with a 3-1 victory -- overwhelming the opposition with 65 percent of the possession and a total of 26 shots.

Premier League Matchday 3 will see these two top-four hopefuls clash in the North of England when Liverpool makes the trip to Newcastle’s infamous St. James Park. The Toon fans will be out in full force for this one, which should be a thrilling end-to-end showdown.

With an early advantage in the standings up for grabs, let’s make some Premier League predictions for this game, focusing on potential goalscorers and total goals.

Newcastle’s season-opening performance against Aston Villa immediately made this look like a potential top-four team. Villa, expected to contend for at least the top eight this year, is by no means a walkover. The losers didn’t even play poorly, but Newcastle was on another level and deserved all five goals it managed to score.

Alexander Isak scored twice in that match and was deadly in front of the goal. The Swedish star striker had 10 goals in 22 Premier League games last season -- his first in England after a transfer from Spain’s Real Sociedad of La Liga. If the reported $70-plus million deal for Isak is accurate, it would be a club-record signing, and he is certainly making it pay off so far this year.

Sandro Tonali was involved in the Toon’s biggest deal of this summer's transfer window, as Newcastle pulled the Italian midfielder away from AC Milan for around $60 million. He is expected to be a stalwart of the team’s midfield this year -- a player who can make significant contributions both defensively and going forward.

Tonali was the first Newcastle player to score in the opener against Aston Villa, poking one home from close range just six minutes into his Premier League debut.

Newcastle certainly looks to have a formidable team this year, but it must prove itself against the rival top-four clubs if it wants to be taken seriously. While the 1-0 loss to Manchester City was a close one, it could have been worse. Eddie Howe’s team struggled to create many chances against the reigning Premier League champions.

Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in its first game this season before battling back to beat Bournemouth 3-1. The team’s offensive creativity took over the game and proved too much for the Cherries, who couldn’t keep up with the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Mo Salah.

Liverpool’s first goal demonstrated its front line’s value. Jota created space in the box before pulling the ball back to Luis Diaz, who flicked it up and volleyed it in at the near post.

Dominik Szoboszlai won a penalty that led to Salah’s tap-in goal for a 2-1 lead after Szoboszlai’s spot kick was saved. Liverpool’s third goal was yet another tap-in after Szoboszlai’s long-range shot was fought off by the keeper.

This Liverpool squad is as creative and dangerous on offense as any team in the Premier Lague, and it is almost untouchable at times when it controls the ball. Two games into the season, we’ve seen two versions of Liverpool’s team. The first was a group of players who played off the ball for the majority of their game against Chelsea, claiming just 35 percent of the possession. The second was a team that dominated the ball against Bournemouth.

Both Newcastle and Liverpool provide fans with a lot of excitement and have great talent, which should make for an entertaining late Sunday afternoon match in the UK. Check out the Premier League odds for this game and get a betting edge with my free soccer picks below.
Newcastle vs. Liverpool Lineups and Injuries

Eddie Howe's Newcastle United team will be without Joe Willock, who is out with a pulled hamstring. Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth are also unlikely to play.

After he was injured against Man City, Joelinton might not be able to play in this game. If he can’t go, Sean Longstaff or Elliot Anderson might fill in for him in the midfield.

On the other side, Liverpool has successfully appealed Alexis Mac Allister's red card, making him available for the upcoming match.

Thiago Alcantara won't be available for Liverpool, however, and Curtis Jones didn't play at Bournemouth at all. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz both suffered minor injuries against Bournemouth, so their availability will depend on how well they recover this week.

Newcastle vs. Liverpool Predictions and Pick

Anytime Goalscorer

To kick off my Premier League prop bets for this game, I am focused on the anytime goalscorer category. Luis Diaz is off to a flying start with two goals in two games for a Liverpool club that has opened the season with four points.

Diaz might start out on the left, but his ability to cut inside and pop up anywhere in the final third makes him really tough to mark. He’s got the freedom to move among this fluid Liverpool front three, and between Salah, Jota, and Diaz himself, the spacing can be a real headache for defenders.

Diaz is already enjoying himself in the new Premier League season and looks like he can come up with a goal or two at any moment.

Newcastle only allowed one goal against Manchester City, but the fullbacks had trouble with Phil Foden when they pressed, and City was able to move the ball into open space to generate shooting opportunities for both Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, who scored the lone goal in his team’s 1-0 win.

I’ll take Diaz to make it three goals in three games.

The Pick: Luis Diaz to score anytime (+250)

Both Teams to Score

As mentioned earlier, there’s a lot of talent on these two teams and both are capable of finding space in the final third because of their offensive prowess.

Newcastle scored five goals against a very strong Aston Villa team, while Liverpool was able to create enough space against Chelsea to take an early lead in its season-opener. Liverpool then went on to score three goals against Bournemouth and could have had more had it not been forced to play with 10 men for the final 30 minutes that followed Alexis Mac Allister’s controversial red card.

While both teams have plenty of scoring ability, both have also allowed goals in each match they have played so far. In big wins over Aston Villa and Bournemouth, these teams gave up goals in games they were otherwise dominating, as momentary defensive lapses proved costly.

I’m confident that both teams will find the back of the net in this one, and a potential high-scoring affair could result.

The Pick: Both Teams to Score - Yes (-223)

Total Goals

To round out my Premier League predictions for this weekend, I will delve into the total-goals market.

This pick might seem a little far-fetched, but a total of four goals in this game doesn’t at all seem like a tall order. Sure, these are strong teams, and Liverpool in particular has a strong defense that includes Virgil Van Dijk, one of the greatest defenders in the world.

That said, a 2-2 draw seems totally plausible, and these defenses can only hold out for so long in a game that could have a chaotic ending. The only indication this might not happen is how Newcastle struggled against Manchester City, failing to generate many clear-cut chances in that game.

Playing at home, however, should make for a different story this time around. Liverpool has proven to be vulnerable at the back, while Newcastle’s players have shown that when they are on top of their game, they have more than enough attacking talent to blow teams away. I’m confident placing a bet on the over 3.5 goals line to round out my picks and predictions for this Premier League game.
