This week’s Monday Night Football doubleheader includes a tough road matchup for the 4-8 Tennessee Titans, who travel to South Florida to take on the 9-3 Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are currently sitting pretty with the No. 1 seed in the AFC, but the Baltimore Ravens, who are also 9-3, are snapping at their heels. Miami has won all eight of its games against opponents with a losing record this season, so this should be another check in the win column for the Dolphins.

It won’t be so easy for Miami, because Tennessee will look to put up a fight. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel’s teams never go down easy, and his defensive line won’t be intimidated by Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel’s dominant offense. Given their 4-8 record, the Titans’ focus has already moved away from any playoff hopes and onto the continued development of rookie quarterback Will Levis. Keeping up with Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa is as tough a test as any young QB can get. The question therefore is: Will Levis give the Titans a chance?

Titans vs. Dolphins Preview

With so many quarterback injuries throughout the NFL this year, fans have become accustomed to watching backup quarterbacks in 2023. Tennessee QB Will Levis, who took over when Ryan Tannehill got hurt, has performed admirably in his first six starts as a rookie, but keeping up with Tua Tagovailoa and the NFL’s second-highest scoring offense will be the toughest test of his young career.

Levis almost got the job done last week when he threw for 224 yards and a touchdown in the Titans’ 31-28 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He will have more on his plate this week, however, as he attempts to dissect Miami defensive coordinator’s Vic Fangio defense, which boasts Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard at the cornerback positions. The duo has made 10 Pro Bowls between them and will capitalize on any sniff of a wayward pass from the Titans’ rookie quarterback.

Levis will also have to keep his eyes on Miami’s pass rush. The Dolphins have notched 10 sacks over their last two games, and Levis was downed six times by the Colts last week. With Miami expected to put up a lot of points in this one, the Dolphins' defensive line will get plenty of opportunities to pin their ears back and go sack-hunting.

The rookie can at least take some comfort in having running back Derrick Henry in his backfield. Henry has rushed for a total of 178 yards and four touchdowns over his last two games. Miami allowed 4.9 yards per carry and two rushing touchdowns to Washington last week, so if Henry can find similar running room, it could go a long way toward making life easier for Levis.

Establishing the run might not be so easy for Tennessee if Miami comes out of the blocks fast, which they have a tendency to do. If the Titans have to pass their way out of a hole, they will need a big game from veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins won’t get an easy ride against Howard and Ramsey, but he has managed to catch five of Levis’ seven touchdowns passes this year. Can he find enough holes in Fangio’s defense to keep the Titans in the game?

One thing we know for certain is that Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill should have no problem getting loose against the Titans’ secondary. He had 157 receiving yards and two touchdowns at Washington last week, bringing his season total up to 1,481 yards and 12 touchdowns. Those numbers lead the league, and with a 2,000-yard season in his crosshairs, Hill won’t be letting up any time soon. Tennessee ranks in the bottom third of the league when it comes to completion percentage allowed to opposing quarterbacks as well as passing yards yielded per game.

Tagovailoa wasn’t sacked at all against the Commanders, and the Titans’ defensive line has just lost Jeffrey Simmons to injury. Tennessee will need all the help it can get to slow down this Miami offense. Tagovailoa doesn’t just have the NFL’s leading receiver at his disposal; he also benefits from the presence of star third-year receiver Jaylen Waddle and an elite running game. Waddle is on track for his third consecutive 1,000-yard season, while Miami’s running-back duo of De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert are averaging a league-leading 5.3 yards per carry.

Tennessee is known for its run defense, but Miami head coach Mike McDaniel’s creative play designs have proved mostly unstoppable this season. The Dolphins’ arsenal of speed demons and use of pre-snap motions create huge chasms of space for their playmakers to utilize. It’s very difficult to find a weak spot when Tagovailoa and Co. take the field, and it’s hard to see them not completely overwhelming the Titans' defense on Monday Night Football.

Titans vs. Dolphins Predictions and Picks

The Miami Dolphins are the AFC’s No. 1 seed for a reason, and they match up very well against this 4-8 Tennessee Titans team. Not only should Miami be able to move the ball with ease against Tennessee’s poor secondary, but the Dolphins’ defense should also have no problem getting the better of Titans rookie QB Will Levis.

Levis has flashed brilliance on some of his deep throws this season, but typical rookie traits are still there, and a matchup against Miami cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard is definitely not easy. The Dolphins should win by a healthy margin on Monday night.

The Pick: Miami Dolphins -13 (-110)

The Titans have long been considered a pass-funnel, which plays beautifully into the hands of an offense that benefits from the athleticism of star wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Dolphins also have an athletic freak in their backfield named De’Von Achane, who has registered 635 total yards and nine touchdowns in just six games this season.

The Dolphins will be the stars of the show in this one, and I see them posting a huge total. Tennessee will likely score enough points in garbage time to take us past the over/under total.

The Pick: Over 46.5 points (-110)

Best NFL Player-Prop Bets for Titans vs. Dolphins

Tyjae Spears

Derrick Henry is the main man when it comes to Tennessee’s running backs, but Tyjae Spears is also doing a lot of damage to opposing defenses. Spears has averaged four receptions per game over his last six outings, and Tennessee should be fighting from behind in this one. It will be hard for the Titans to get an opportunity to establish the run, so I expect lots of routes out of the backfield for Spears.

The Pick: Tyjae Spears Over 14.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

Tua Tagovailoa

Indianapolis QB Gardner Minshew threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns against the Tennessee secondary last week, which tells you all you need to know about what Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa should be able to do on Monday. Tennessee plays well against the run, so we can expect lots of drop-backs for Tagovailoa. With the NFL’s leading receiver as his first option and Jaylen Waddle as his second, he should have no problem going over his line of 286.5 passing yards.

The Pick: Tua Tagovailoa Over 286.5 passing yards (-115)
