Oregon vs. Arizona State Preview

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix is now the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman trophy at the end of a season in which the Ducks’ offense has been nearly flawless.

Nix has thrown 29 touchdown passes, amassing over 3,000 passing yards with just two interceptions this year. The Ducks boast a 9-1 record, and their experienced senior quarterback has undeniably played a significant role in their success. Currently leading the race for the prestigious award, Nix is ahead of stars such as Washington QB Michael Penix Jr., LSU QB Jayden Daniels, and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

The only blemish on what has been an excellent season for the Ducks is the 36-33 loss they suffered at Washington on Oct. 14. That defeat does pose a problem when it comes to Oregon’s College Football Playoff hopes.

The Ducks need to control their own destiny and win each of their remaining games to make the playoffs, but if the Huskies also go undefeated, then Oregon’s hopes of making the final four would be dashed.

With that in mind, a road win over a struggling Arizona State team offers the Ducks an opportunity to gain some ground if Washington falters in its potential trap game this weekend at Iowa State.

Oregon is favored by 23 points in this game, which should help make Nix’s case for the Heisman.

Arizona State’s defense allows an average of more than 225 passing yards per game this season, and that has come against offenses far less dangerous than the one that Oregon will bring to Tempe. The last time the Sun Devils faced a team anywhere near Oregon’s talent level, things got extremely ugly.

That unfolded a couple of weeks ago, when the Sun Devils played at Utah. ASU put up a grand total of 83 yards of offense in that 55-3 loss to the Utes. Not 83 rushing yards nor 83 passing yards, but 83 yards in total.

In fairness, the Sun Devils have been crippled by injuries at the quarterback position this season. They began the year with promising freshman recruit Jaden Rashada before a lingering injury from his high school days cut his season short.

Their next quarterback, Trenton Bourguet, got hurt in the Utah game --throwing for minus-1 yards before exiting with a leg injury. His replacement, Jacob Conover, went 5-for-22 for 41 yards and was also intercepted.

Bourguet was back in the lineup for last weekend’s game at UCLA, and the Sun Devils were able to control possession and get a win. The 17-7 victory was their third of the year, and they will now hope to at least hold their own against Oregon as they try to gather some momentum for next season.

Defense is going to be a problem for ASU. The Sun Devils have allowed an average of 400 total yards over their last three games and they are now about to face the nation’s No. 2 team when it comes to total offense.

If Arizona State wants to at least make this game competitive, it needs to get running back Cameron Skattebo going early. In the Sun Devils’ Oct. 28 win over Washington State -- arguably the best game they have played all year -- Skattebo rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown.

The third-year back transferred in from Sacramento State last year after compiling a superb 1,369 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the Hornets. He has proven to be a valuable asset for the Sun Devils as both a runner and receiver.

Arizona State has only seven passing touchdowns this season. To me, this is a big concern against a team that can score 60 points in a hurry. This game is a real mismatch and it could quickly get away from Kenny Dillingham’s Sun Devils.

There’s no doubt that this is a rebuilding year for ASU. Young QB Rashada is the future of the program, and the team certainly wasn’t expecting to be without him for most of the season. Next year, things might look different, but for now being able to come away from this Oregon game with a little pride would be a great result.

Oregon vs. Arizona State Predictions and Pick

The 23-point spread seems daunting, but Oregon is in another stratosphere compared to Arizona State right now. I gave the Sun Devils a chance against Utah, and their top QB was injured in that game, but ASU was nevertheless completely overwhelmed by a Utes team that has been without its star quarterback and tight end all season.

Oregon has averaged 520 yards per game this season, second only to LSU, and the Ducks are third in the nation in scoring with 42.4 points per game.

Nix is surrounded by elite-level weapons, and the Ducks offense can hurt you in a multitude of ways. Running back Bucky Irving ran for 118 yards and a touchdown in the Ducks’ last game against USC, while QB Bo Nix threw for more 400 yards – resulting in big days for Troy Franklin (147 yards and a touchdown) and Tez Johnson (126 yards and two touchdowns).

Arizona State isn't going to be able to keep the Ducks out of the end zone, and Oregon’s defense is a nasty unit to deal with when your offense isn’t clicking.

The Pick: Oregon -23 (-115)

The fact that Oregon averages more than 40 points per game has me believing the over is plausible here, but it will require Arizona State to score at least two touchdowns.

With Trenton Bourguet at QB for the Sun Devils, I believe two TDs are possible, but it will take some effort against a team vying for the College Football Playoff.

I like Oregon to reach at least 45 points, so I’ll put my faith in at least a couple of scores for the home team, which won’t go out of this one without a fight.
