#4 Alabama vs. #6 Clemson Prediction and Pick

The Western bracket’s Elite Eight matchup consists of a rather unexpected SEC head-to-head between Alabama’s Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers.

Alabama just secured their second-ever Elite Eight appearance with a huge upset win over the first-seed Tar Heels. Grant Nelson led the Tide with 24 points, capped off by a huge pick and roll layup through contact to pick up the and-one, giving Alabama an 87-85 lead with 38 seconds left. With UNC sprinting down the court to equalize, Nelson laid down the hammer with a heroic block over the top of RJ Davis. North Carolina kept the ball though, and on the ensuing possession Davis attempted to drive on Nelson once again, and a flailing shot from smothering coverage went nowhere near the cup, resulting in a shot clock violation that essentially ended the game.

As great as Nelson played, the Tide also had enormous contributions from Mark Sears, Rylan Griffin, and Aaron Estrada, who each posted 18+ points in the shootout. As coach Nate Oats said in a postgame interview, they seem to be peaking at the right time, and should be an extremely difficult starting five to slow down for the remainder of the tournament.

Clemson had a big upset win of their own though, knocking off the two-seeded Arizona Wildcats on Thursday. The Tigers’ night was characterized by great perimeter defense resulting in a horrid 5-28 line from three for Arizona. That kind of shooting can take out any team, and is a huge reason why Clemson has made it this far in the tournament. The Tigers’ shooting was solid in comparison — 49% from the field and 32% from three — and some late-game contact finishing was good enough to get them to the next round.

Chase Hunter led Clemson with 18 in the 77-72 win, but the argument could be made that Arizona beat themselves in this one. Although you can never discount a win against an opponent like the Wildcats in the Sweet Sixteen, it did feel like Arizona lost the game more than Clemson won it. Caleb Love, who’s been great all season, dropped a goose egg on nine attempts from three, several of which came on open looks.

While Clemson has had a great tournament run so far, Bama just looks to be too hot right now. While anything can happen at this time of year, I’m going with Alabama for the first leg of my round out my College basketball parlay picks today CBB parlay picks.

The Pick: Alabama Moneyline (-167)

#4 Duke vs #11 NC State Prediction and Pick

Duke and NC State just pulled off two of the most impactful upsets of March Madness so far, and now they are set to face each other just two days later.

NC State is the obvious Cinderella of the tournament: everyone thought the Wolfpack were a product of a weak tournament schedule that included wins against an undermanned Texas Tech team and a round two victory over the 14 seeded Oakland Golden Grizzlies. That narrative was put to bed when NC State took on (#2) Marquette, grabbing a 10-point lead in the early minutes and never letting go until the final buzzer.

The most notable part of the game was the Wolfpack’s perimeter defense, allowing only four 3-pointers on 31 attempts, part of which was certainly self-inflicted on Marquette. The Golden Eagles track record wouldn’t have suggested this though, as they just posted 60% from the field and 40% from three in a close win over Colorado, so NC State deserves a ton of credit. Senior guards DJ Horne and Casey Morsell scored the majority of the team’s points with 19 and 15 respectively, and Mohamed Diarra locked down the back end with 13 defensive rebounds.

Despite their seeding, Duke is clearly a different beast than Marquette. NC State has proved they are a very good team, but they haven’t proved that they’re special. Duke is going to put that to the test.

Coming off of a high-flying 40-point victory over JMU, the Blue Devils only dropped 54 points against Houston, by far their lowest point total of the season, but they found a way to win.

Kyle Filipowski’s 16 points was the most for the Blue Devils, and Jeremy Roach’s 14 (all of which came in the second half) allowed Duke to hold on in the thriller. Houston played the way you have to play to beat Duke, slowing down the game and playing physical to quickly collapse on driving lanes, but losing Jamal Shead early proved too big of a hurdle to overcome for the Cougars. Unlike his online persona, Jared McCain had a quiet game for the Blue Devils, but that’s the luxury of having as many weapons as Duke does. When one guy has an off game there are two more right there ready to step up in his place.

Although Duke got away this time, Houston provided the perfect blueprint for another team to take them down. That team, however, is most likely not going to be NC State, who simply don’t have the talent required to take out a team like Duke. Houston led before Jamal Shead got injured, and never recovered after he was knocked out of the game. NC State doesn’t have a Jamal Shead like player in the first place, and their defense is nowhere near as strong as Houston’s. The Blue Devils should be able to get into a rhythm early, so stay away from picking NC State to cover the 6.5-point spread, this might get ugly.

I’m going with Duke against the spread to round out my College basketball parlay picks today.

The Pick: Duke -6.5 (-115)
