The Elite Eight round of the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament is under way with South Carolina and North Carolina State having already punched their tickets to the Final Four. The most highly-anticipated Elite Eight game will take place on Monday night, when the defending champion LSU Tigers face the Iowa Hawkeyes in a rematch of last year's national championship game. Will the Tigers come out on top again, or will Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes steal the show?

LSU vs. Iowa Prediction and Picks

As soon as the bracket for the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament was released, fans recognized that one of the most ideal games would be an Elite Eight rematch of last year’s championship game between Louisiana State and Iowa. Well, ask and you shall receive, because the fans’ wishes have come true.

Most people who have followed NCAA women’s basketball this season likely expect Caitlin Clark and her Iowa teammates to get revenge for last year by winning this game. That sentiment is understandable, given Clark’s regular-season accomplishments in 2023-24. However, having seen LSU rout Iowa 102-85 last April, there is no reason anyone should think that this year’s game will have a different outcome.

Is Clark better than she was last year? Yes, but the problem is that LSU is significantly more talented as well. The Tigers’ talent hasn’t necessarily translated into the team appearing as dominant as it did a year ago, but there are a few reasons for that.  First, the level of competition has unquestionably been greater than it was last season. Second, LSU needed time to adjust to the addition of transfers Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow.

Iowa’s offense is lethal, and the Hawkeyes have fared well against all their tournament opponents other than West Virginia, which kept the score close. Holy Cross was competitive for a stretch, and Colorado showed potential against the Hawkeyes, too. However, LSU is significantly better than the three teams Iowa has faced so far.

Indeed, even if Iowa’s last three opponents pooled all their best players together in one team, LSU would still have the more talented roster. The public might want to see Caitlin Clark win a championship, but the Tigers have all but been guaranteed another national title ever since they won it a year ago. Give me LSU on the money line. I’d even take an alternate spread here because the Tigers are bigger, better, faster, and stronger.

The Pick: LSU ML (+110)

The last time these teams met in the April 2023 NCAA championship showdown, LSU routed Iowa 102-85 in a game that featured 187 total points. Both teams’ offenses are now much better than they were a year ago. Iowa leads the nation with 91.9 points per game this season, and LSU is not far behind at 85.9 points per game. Neither team has been consistently good on defense, and it will be a challenge for them to establish any defensive consistency on Monday night. At least five future WNBA players will be on the court in this game, and although 168.5 points is more in line with WNBA games than NCAA totals, I still like this one to go over. These two powerhouse schools are sure to bring us nonstop entertainment in the Elite Eight.

The Pick: Over 168.5 (-110)
