The definition of collective institutional emasculation is defined by the men’s basketball team at the University of Iowa, where nobody cares about the Hawkeyes unless they are talking about the women’s team led by superfreak scorer Caitlyn Clark.

OK, that is going overboard a little bit. But you get the point.

Iowa’s men’s team finished in a tie for sixth place in the Big Ten and is a bubble team at best when it comes to looking forward to Selection Sunday and wondering whether it will make the cut. With the same 18-13 regular-season record as Michigan State, Indiana, and Minnesota, Iowa certainly has an argument for being part of March Madness.

How the Hawkeyes do in the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis will play a big role in determining their fate, especially if they somehow manage to win that tournament or finish as its runner-up. Since the Wolverines, Spartans and Hoosiers are all sitting in the same boat as the Hawkeyes, this will be one of the most competitive conference tournaments in a big week for college basketball.

Such is life on the bubble for the dozen or so schools that would surely welcome the proposed expansion of the tournament to 72 or 78 games.

Coming out of the final weekend of regular-season play, the Hawkeyes had odds of +25000 to reach the Final Four.
