Kings vs Pacers Preview

The blockbuster trade between the Kings and Pacers that shook up both franchises is about six days out from its one-year anniversary. Last February, the Kings and Pacers agreed to a trade that would send Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson to Indiana in exchange for Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb and a 2023 second-round pick.

Since making the trade, this will be Sabonis’ first time back in Indiana since joining the Kings. In his first meeting against Indiana this season, which was played in Sacramento, Sabonis had 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in 23 minutes.

Their first meeting between these two teams wasn’t even close as the Kings controlled the game from start to finish. After jumping out to a 13-point lead after the first quarter, which would’ve been a 16-point lead if Pacers T.J. McConnell didn’t hit a Hail Mary three-pointer as time expired, the Kings wouldn’t look back. Every time the Pacers would put together a run of some sort, the Kings would respond with a bigger run themselves. The Kings shot 16-43 from three point range and really just had their way with Indiana in their first meeting.

Kings vs Pacers Prediction and Picks

The Pacers will look to even the season series on Friday night as they’ll look to avenge their 114-137 loss that they suffered back in November to Sacramento. They’ll get some help as Kings guard De’Aaron Fox, who scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting and had six assists and five rebounds in their first meeting, will miss Friday’s game for personal reasons.

In their first meeting, the Kings shot 50 per cent from the field, outrebounded the Pacers, and truly controlled the entire game from start to finish. But the key for the Kings was getting out in transition as they outscored the Pacers 31-8 in fastbreak points. The Kings being able to push the tempo off of turnovers or rebounds really helped open up their first meeting and helped them respond to a few of Indiana’s runs. While Fox is a key contributor in the Kings' transition game, the Pacers are one of the worst teams as they rank 25th in fastbreak points allowed. As for the Kings, they rank second in the league in transition defense.

No Fox will definitely hinder this Kings team as they’re 1-2 this season when he doesn’t play. While it’s a small sample size in those three games, the Kings failed to score more than 107 and didn’t even crack 100 points in any of those games. It’s a significant difference for the highest-scoring team in the NBA that averages 119.5 points per game.

The Pacers are on back-to-back Friday night and had a rising Los Angeles Lakers team on the ropes Thursday night as they lost 111-112. In a game with no Fox, the Pacers squeak out the win at home.

The Pick: Indiana Pacers ML (+120)

In their first meeting, these two teams combined for 251 points, with the Kings scoring 137 of them. However, the Kings won’t have their leading scorer in this one as Fox, who averages 24.3 points per game, will be out with personal reasons.

As I touched on above, in games without Fox, the Kings average close to 15 lfewer points per game. Points may still come easy in this one, but without Fox, and the Pacers on a back-to-back, I’m leaning the under.

The Pick: Under 235.5 (-110)
