The NCAA basketball tournament is upon us, and the Indiana Hoosiers find themselves in a rematch with Kent State, a school that eliminated the Hoosiers more than 20 years ago in the 2001 NCAA tournament’s first round.

The Golden Flashes went into that game as a No. 13 seed and took down the fourth-seeded Hoosiers with a 77-73 upset. In 2023, the two sides face each other once again with the exact same seed numbers. Will history repeat itself, or are the Hoosiers ready to avenge the early exit they endured back then?

Kent State enters the tournament 28-6 overall, having finished second in the Mid-American Conference’s regular season before going on to beat top-seeded Toledo in the MAC championship game. The Hoosiers’ 22-11 record also gave them a second-place finish in the Big Ten, but the Hoosiers fell to Penn State in the conference tournament’s semifinals.

The Golden Flashes are full of confidence heading into the first round of March Madness. They have won six straight games and pulled away from Toledo to claim their NCAA berth. Kent State’s backcourt was outstanding in the MAC Final. Senior guard Malique Jacobs recorded an impressive double-double, while his classmate Sincere Carry dropped 26 points.

Point Spread

The Indiana Hoosiers come into this game as one of the most efficient teams on the offensive end, shooting 49 percent from the floor. That percentage ranks first in the Big Ten and among the top 10 in the country. The Hoosiers shoot fewer 3-pointers than most NCAA tournament teams, but they have their own game plan built around star forward Trayce Jackson-Davis and freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino.

Hood-Schifino was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Throughout the season, he proved deadly from midrange and showed he can handle big moments despite being in his first year. Jackson-Davis averages a team-leading 20.8 points per game (16th in the country) to go with a team-leading 10.9 rebounds (sixth). The Indiana forward, who has 2.7 blocks per game this season, will be tough for the Golden Flashes to handle on Friday night.

Kent State is making its first tournament appearance in six years, and senior guard Malique Jacobs will be the key to their shot of advancing. Jacobs, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, leads the Golden Flashes on the defensive end. He’ll have his hands full with Hood-Schifino, which should make for an interesting matchup.

Jacobs is one of three players in Kent State’s starting five who averages at least 10 points per game.  Sincere Carry leads the team with 17.6 PPG.

The Golden Flashes have some of the fastest hands in the country, leading the MAC with 8.9 steals per game and ranking 17th in the nation. Can they win the turnover battle and force another upset of the Hoosiers?

This time around, I’m leaning toward the Hoosiers covering the point spread. The spread has been increasing over the last couple of days, indicating that oddsmakers favor it that way, too. A Big Ten opponent marks a significantly more challenging game for the Golden Flashes, and while I respect what they’ve been able to do, particularly in recent weeks, I’m backing the Hoosiers to cover and advance here.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Indiana Hoosiers -4.5 (-105)

Total Points - Over / Under

Kent State has covered the over/under line four times during its current six-game winning streak. The Golden Flashes’ backcourt was hot against Toledo, as their two senior guards combined for 44 points.

The Golden Flashes averaged 76 points per game in the MAC this season, and I think it’s fair to expect to shave a few off that total against a challenging Big Ten opponent. They do, however, allow the fewest points in the MAC, giving up just 65.7 points per game. Kent State’s defense will be an important part of its ability to challenge Indiana, and that has me leaning toward the under as a more likely outcome in this game.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Indiana vs Kent State Under 140.5 (-130)
