UFC 289 Fight Card: Schedule, Predictions, Odds & Best Bets

Amanda Nunes is set to face Irene Aldana in the main event of UFC 289, as Aldana steps in as a late replacement for the injured Juliana Pena. Despite being the underdog, Aldana brings a formidable mix of power and technical expertise that exceeds what Pena was expected to bring to the fight against Nunes.

Although the current champion, Nunes, may have the odds in her favor, Irene Aldana poses a difficult challenge that won't be a straightforward victory for Nunes.

On the undercard, we have the highly anticipated rescheduled fight between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush, a fight that was initially scheduled for May. Oliveira aims to bounce back after his loss in the lightweight title fight at UFC 280, while Dariush, with eight consecutive wins under his belt, is on a dominant streak, making a strong case for his own shot at the title.

Amanda Nunes vs Irene Aldana Prediction & Pick

The main event in the weekends upcoming UFC fights is Amanda Nunes title defense against late challenger Irene Aldana. Nunes has taken part in some of the most entertaining women’s UFC fights in and will once again take on a challenger at UFC 289.

Amanda Nunes typically comes out of the blocks hot and starts firing heavy blows early. She has consistently stunned opponents with her early striking, and has finished 14 of her 22 bantamweight fights inside the first round.

For Irene Aldana, that could be a problem, as she tends to take a while to get into her rhythm and is one of the division's slower starters when it comes to her history of UFC fighting. 

Aldana can certainly take some punishment, but she has been knocked out a couple of times previously. Two of her six losses came by knockout, so she will need to be on her guard against one of the most powerful female strikers the UFC has ever seen.

The question here is whether Aldana can sustain the damage for five full rounds. While she possesses knockout power, knocking out Amanda Nunes is a different conversation. Without being able to do that she will need to stand and bang with Nunes for the majority of this fight, and that could prove overwhelming by the later rounds.

Charles Oliveira tore through the UFC lightweight division with an 11-fight win streak that eventually resulted in him claiming the belt. This included wins over Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. His last fight saw him lose that belt to the division's current champion Islam Makhachev, who overwhelmed the Brazilian with a fast-paced tempo from the get go.

Oliveira returns following the loss and an injury that delayed this fight to face Beneil Dariush at UFC 289. He will be looking to return to his winning ways as one of the greatest submission artists the UFC has ever seen. The Brazilian holds the UFC record with a remarkable 19 finishes, with an incredible 16 submissions.

Dariush, the current favorite, has maintained an undefeated streak for the past five years. While Dariush is steadily rising, this upcoming match presents his toughest test to date. He is determined to secure a title shot, and defeating the former champion would greatly enhance his chances. Nevertheless, Oliveira's extensive experience with 43 fights in his repertoire could heavily influence the outcome.

Oliveira, eager to regain momentum in his UFC career after the title loss, possesses a dangerous submission game that I believe Dariush lacks the defense to withstand. All it takes is one mistake, and 'Do Bronx' will swiftly capitalize, bringing an end to the contest.

This should be a really entertaining fight. Dan Ige has been talking up his game this week and feels confident after breaking his losing streak earlier this year with an emphatic knockout win over Damon Jackson.

Now facing an in-form and highly entertaining Nate Landwehr, Ige believes he has the skill and power to make it look easy.

Landwehr has earned the post-fight $50k bonus in three consecutive fights. He submitted both Austin Lingo and Ludovit Klein while going the distance in a decision win over David Onama in a highly entertaining battle.

While Nate has been climbing in entertainment value and reputation, Ige still lines up as the favorite, and his power and striking could prove the difference.

I believe he wins this one by decision in what could once again be the fight of the night.
