Who are the favorites to win the 2022 MLS Cup?

Los Angeles FC are the pre-season favorites to win the 2022 MLS Cup on the Betway sportsbook, priced at +650 to win the championship game.

Despite missing out on the playoffs last year following a ninth-place finish in the Western Conference, LAFC are at the top of the market following a busy offseason that has seen a high turnover of players, with Carlos Vela and Brian Rodriguez retained as two of three designated players.

The appointment of former USMNT ever-present Steve Cherundolo as head coach is another point of optimism for the Black & Gold ahead of their fifth season in MLS.

Defending MLS champions New York City FC, who beat Portland Timbers on penalties in the 2021 final, are second in the betting at +700.

Seattle Sounders, who lost in the first round of the MLS playoffs in 2021, come in just behind New York City at +750 in the MLS futures odds.

What is the format for the MLS Cup Playoffs?

At the end of the 34-game regular season, the top seven teams in the Eastern and Western conferences qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Teams are seeded from one to seven in each conference, and placed in two separate conference brackets, with the top seed in each given a bye into the second round.

The playoffs consist of four single-elimination rounds, with the first-round winners advancing to the Conference Semifinals, where they are joined by the two top seeds. Semifinals winners then advance to the Conference Finals, and finally the MLS Cup.

In the 2021 playoffs, New York City beat Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference Finals, while Portland Timbers overcame Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference finals.

NYCFC went on to win the MLS Cup in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

Below LAFC, NYCFC and Seattle in the MLS odds are the defending Supporters’ Shield winners, New England Revolution.

New England won the Supporters’ Shield – awarded to the team with the best regular season record – after a season in which it amassed 73 points, 12 more than any other side.

The Revolution could not translate that form into the playoffs as it lost in the Conference Semifinals to eventual MLS Cup winners NYCFC, but are +900 to go all the way in 2022.

Philadelphia Union are priced at +1000, while Nashville SC come in at +1200.
