The 2024 Copa America kicks off with the opening match between defending champion Argentina vs Canada, at 8pm ET on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at the Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

All 10 CONMEBOL members will feature, with the addition of six teams from CONCACAF. According to ALL sportsbooks, Argentina (+187) is the current favorite to win the 48^th edition of the Copa America.

I have a gut feeling Argentina will experience something similar to their first game at the 2022 World Cup, when Saudi Arabia shocked the world, beating them 2-1 -- arguably one of the all-time biggest soccer upsets at the group stage.

Canada’s recent draw against France on June 9 will boost confidence for Jesse Marsch’s team against Argentina. Last time they played, Argentina destroyed them with a 5-0 win in May 2010. Things have changed now.

Canada has the third-youngest team in the tournament with an average age of 25.4. Led by Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Canada’s roster has more than 10 players playing in Europe’s most competitive leagues, including Bundesliga, La Liga, and the Premier League.

Their well-structured defense, along with Cyle Larin (Mallorca) and Jonathan David (Lille) on top, can surprise Chile and Peru to advance in second place. I’ll call it here – Canada is the Cinderella story of the 2024 Copa America.

Copa America Group B Prediction and Picks 

Ecuador has one of the most promising, young talents in the tournament. The fourth-youngest team has an average age of 25.7 (same as Brazil). They have talent such as the most expensive Premier League transfer of all time in Moises Caicedo (Chelsea), 17-year-old star Kendry Paez (Chelsea signed him for $20 million), Piero Hincapie (Bayern Leverkusen), and William Pacho (Eintracht Frankfurt) - two of the most demanded center-backs in the upcoming summer transfer window.

For many critics, this Ecuadorian team is a “golden generation” led by Felix Sanchez Bas, the worst manager of the 2022 FIFA World Cup (Qatar was eliminated with 3 losses and a -6 in goal differential). Unfortunately, the team is missing Pervis Estupiñán (Brighton & Hove Albion) due to injury – a key piece that is making Sanchez Bas’s game plan go bananas.

Ecuador’s biggest obstacle to winning Group B is themselves. The team needs Enner Valencia in prime scoring mode and Moises connecting with Kendry in the mid to generate goal chances. Lucky for them, Mexico is on the same boat when it comes to finding their best starting lineup, and Venezuela has been under the radar working in silence.  At +150, betting on Ecuador to win the group is a good bet for parlays.

Not much to add to this group. It will be shocking if Uruguay doesn’t end in first place. USA and Uruguay play the last match of the group. By that time, I’m predicting both teams with 6 points. Goal difference will play a big role to decide who advances in first place.

Copa America Group D Prediction and Picks 

In my previous column, I selected Colombia as my 2024 Copa America dark horse pick. Luiz Diaz (Liverpool F.C.) is on fire! The team has all the weapons to tie or beat Brazil. Same as Group C, the goal difference will be a key decision maker of who advances in first place. At +225, is the best bet of the group stage.
