The Tampa Bay Lightning are truly living rent free in the heads of all of the Toronto Maple Leafs players. The Lightning’s 7-3 victory on Tuesday night wasn’t just a win but a statement. Last season both teams met in the opening round with Toronto blowing a 3-2 series lead against the Lightning. Toronto opened up the series last year with a 5-0 win, but that wasn’t the case this year as Tampa Bay gave them a friendly reminder of who sent them home packing a year ealier. Game 2 on Thursday night will be a pivotal game for both teams. A 2-0 Lightning lead heading back to Tampa Bay could be ‘all she wrote’ for Toronto, who’s seeking its first appearance in the second round since 2004. While the world might believe the Maple Leafs will tie this series back up, I just don’t see it happening. Yes, it was just one game. But the dominance the Lightning showed in Game One showed that they’re just the superior team. The Lightning had their struggles of consistency during the regular season and veteran Corey Perry addressed that to the media following Game One. But this Tampa team is built for the playoffs. The Lightning take game two and put all the pressure on Toronto as they head to Tampa Bay for game 3.

The Seattle Kraken showed why they were a top five offense and one of the top defensive teams in the NHL this season with their 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night. The Kraken never trailed in Game One and goaltender Philipp Grubauer had 34 saves against the Avalanche (who played their top lines for a majority of the game). Colorado is hopeful to have veterans Andrew Cogliano, Jack Johnson, and Darren Helm back on Thursday night but this is unfamiliar territory for the Avalanche. During their 2022 Stanley Cup run, the Avalanche never trailed in a playoff series. The Kraken brought it in Game One, punching Colorado in the face with an early goal and never looking back. That’ll change on Thursday night as the Avalanche will respond, hopefully getting some of their veteran presence back from injury. Colorado wins in regulation.

The Winnipeg Jets' run to the playoffs has been due to great defensive play over the past month and a half and it showed against Vegas Tuesday night. The Jets 5-1 win not only sent shockwaves throughout the league, but holding a stellar offense like Vegas to just 17 shots on goal was a statement. Vegas was booed off the ice as they only had two shots on goal in the third period. While many think that Game One was just a fluke and the Jets defense isn’t that good, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. But it is and has been that good. The Jets allow the 10th fewest shots on goal in the NHL and the 10th fewest goals per game, so their defense is the real deal. Will they be able to pull off the upset again on Thursday night, I’m not sure. But will they be able to stay within two goals, absolutely. Give me the Jets on the alternate puck line.
