After the incredible amount of parity in the first round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs, the second round has not fallen suit at all so far. After four games in each series, one was already over, two had a team up 3-1, and just one was tied at 2-2.

Tonight we get to see who breaks the tie, while the Battle of Alberta may end far more prematurely than we thought, with the Calgary Flames facing elimination.

Carolina Hurricanes to defeat New York Rangers (-170) & over 5.5 total goals (+115)

The Hurricanes have been brutal while on the road in the playoffs so far, but heading home they have a chance to regain momentum in this series. Despite the fact that it’s been the closest series in the second round, it’s arguably been the least compelling overall, but that’s got to end as the season gets into its decisive moments.

The Hurricanes are the heavy favourites, and they just flat out have not been able to beat Igor Shesterkin regularly, which has allowed the Rangers to exert an incredible amount of control on the series overall. Shesterkin is amazing, but eventually a team that shoots as much as the Hurricanes do is going to break through, and I’m betting this is the game.

Seth Jarvis to score anytime vs New York Rangers (+270)

The leader in expected goals for both teams in these playoffs, young Seth Jarvis looks like the one who is going to finally break the dam for the Hurricanes and get the ball rolling for their offensive game.

If Jarvis can get one by Shesterkin early in Game 5, expect things to get rolling for the Hurricanes in a big way. That doesn’t mean it’ll carry over into the next game, especially with the Hurricanes’ struggles away from home, but in Raleigh the crowd could easily pump them up for a blow-out.

Calgary Flames to defeat Edmonton Oilers (-150) & under 6.5 total goals (+100)

It’s been a wild series so far, with the favorite Calgary Flames ultimately being taken to the woodshed by the Edmonton Oilers. By the underlying numbers, the Flames have actually outplayed the Oilers, but Jacob Markstrom has allowed over twice as many goals at even strength than expected, including some incredibly soft ones.

Let’s not take away from Edmonton though, they’ve played with speed and skill to cut up the Flames’ largely immobile defensive core, and Connor McDavid is playing arguably the best hockey of his career. With all that said, just like the first round against the Dallas Stars, the Flames have allowed their opponent to dictate what style will be played.

In order to get back into this series, the Flames will need to play Flames hockey, and that means slowing things down a little, and cutting down on high end scoring chances. That should allow Markstrom to see the ice better and have a greater impact on the game, and should allow the Flames’ slower, but cerebral players to dictate the scoreline.

Tyler Toffoli to score anytime vs Edmonton Oilers (+190)

The Calgary Flames failing to score on their many opportunities has been the story of the playoffs for every game but Game 1 of the Battle of Alberta, and Toffoli has been a name that’s on the lips of the play-by-play announcer often, but rarely the goal announcer.

Based on the shots he’s taken so far, Toffoli should have more than twice as many goals as he currently does in these playoffs. Fans seem to be very frustrated with the team’s prized trade deadline acquisition, but the truth of the matter is that Toffoli continues to get opportunities.

With the Flames’ season on the line, bet on the Stanley Cup winner to make bank on the promise of his previous shots.
