The phase of the NHL season we’re currently in is arguably the least interesting part of the season. Most of the playoff teams know they’re making the playoffs, most of the teams on the outside looking in know they aren’t. The two most exciting features of the NHL’s schedule right now are the upcoming trade deadline, and the Western Conference Wild Card race.

Five teams are separated by just six points, but as Vegas continues to stumble down the stretch, both Edmonton and Vancouver are closer to playoff spots than it might appear. Vegas, Nashville, Dallas, Edmonton, and Vancouver are the teams to watch down the stretch, with big implications for the trade deadline.

Under 6.5 total goals in Nashville Predators vs St. Louis Blues -165

It’s the battle of incredible Finnish goalies in Smashville, as two teams jockeying for position in the Central Division meet in what promises to be an excellent goaltending battle.

Ville Husso has dramatically burst onto the scene this season and taken over the starting spot from Jordan Binnington in St. Louis, posting an incredible 93 per cent save percentage so far in 23 games, while Juuse Saros is an almost guaranteed to be nominated for the Vezina Trophy after being snubbed last season. Saros has a stellar 92.5 per cent save percentage in 48 games this season, and trails only Igor Shesterkin in goals saved above average.

While the Preds are currently in a Wild Card spot, they’re only three points behind the Blues in the standings, so this game is very important for both teams.

Artturi Lehkonen to score anytime vs Seattle Kraken +375

Sometimes you’ve got to look for the hot hand, and no one on the Montreal Canadiens has been hotter than Artturi Lehkonen lately. With six goals in his last five games, Lehkonen is scoring like we haven’t seen since he was a rookie.

One of the few players who hasn’t taken a game off all season for the Canadiens, he’s been rewarded for his excellent two-way play with more opportunity offensively than in years past, which has him pacing for a career high in goals, assists, and points.

One of the sneaky big names who might be available at the trade deadline, Lehkonen is making a big case to stay with the Canadiens if they can’t find a big, big return.

Anaheim Ducks to defeat New Jersey Devils +120

Neither of these teams are great, neither of them are likely to make the playoffs. The Ducks and Devils are both attempting to set the table for next season, climbing out of their respective rebuilds on the backs of their incredible young players.

Whether it’s Trevor Zegras or Jack Hughes, there’s excitement to be had in watching this game, but while the two are relatively evenly matched, the Ducks are given longer odds to win thanks to the Devils having home ice advantage, and having much better underlying numbers.

What the Devils gain in controlling the flow of play though, they lose in the goaltending department. Only the Kraken have received worse goaltending than the Devils this year, and Anaheim’s young guns will be hungrily looking to exploit that weakness.

Brayden Point to score anytime vs Edmonton Oilers +140

The Tampa Bay Lightning are a proud team, which you might expect after back-to-back Stanley Cups. That pride starts with their star players, who almost always set the table for statement games. On Thursday against the Calgary Flames, a legitimate cup contender, Tampa’s top players were iced out as Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau paced his team to a win with a hat trick.

Still in Alberta, and facing two of the best offensive performers in the sport in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, expect Tampa’s best players to show why they’ve led the team to two straight Stanley Cups.

It’s rough luck for the Oilers that they’ll be running into an angry Lightning team, but expect Point to lead the way in Edmonton.
