The biggest news in the NHL this week is that the struggling Edmonton Oilers have turned to controversy-ridden Evander Kane for a spark. Kane is fresh off of having his contract terminated by the San Jose Sharks for a material breach, which was originally reported as crossing the border while in COVID protocol, but is now shrouded in mystery. Kane is a legitimately good hockey player, but his myriad of locker room and off-ice issues present the Oilers with a real challenge.

Evander Kane to score anytime vs Montreal

Between injuries, labour stoppages, suspensions, and the pandemic, Kane has never played a full NHL season despite being an NHL regular since 2009 at age 18, but paced for 82 games, he’s a relatively consistent 30-goal threat through his prime.

With strong skating, no hesitation to shoot, and a lot of physicality in his game, he should be able to take advantage of the absurdly strong playmaking of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Add in the fact that the Montreal Canadiens have been excellent at getting teams going on hot streaks this year with their sloppy defensive play, and it’s probably a safe bet that Kane strikes in his first game as an Oiler.

Connor McDavid to score anytime vs Montreal -115

Last season when the Oilers needed a push heading into the playoffs, Connor McDavid sliced through the Canadiens like Jedi through an armada of battle droids during the clone wars in a series of games that put to rest all notion of him being shut down by the team earlier in the season.

This year the Canadiens are far less organized defensively, both from a roster construction perspective and coaching one, and once again the Oilers need a bit of a lift. They’ve won a couple of games, sure, but they’re still outside the playoff picture and looking in. That’s unacceptable for this team at this time. The captain has to make a statement against teams they have to beat.

Vegas Golden Knights vs Tampa Bay Lightning to go to overtime +340

Vegas’ tour through the Eastern Conference’s powerhouse teams hasn’t gone very well if you look at it simply from a wins and losses standpoint. Between the Maple Leafs, Penguins, Capitals, Hurricanes, and Panthers they’ve lost four of five against the top end competition. However only two losses came in regulation against that murderer’s row of teams.

Max Pacioretty returned to the Vegas lineup last game, and Mark Stone has been back for two. Their two best forwards returning to form should make them far more difficult to put away, even for the defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning.

Over 5.5 total goals in Calgary Flames vs Vancouver Canucks -105

In recent weeks the Calgary Flames have been shooting the lights out. Johnny Gaudreau especially looks unstoppable - he’s up to sixth in NHL scoring with 51 points in 39 games played.

The Canucks on the other hand have been very stingy, not scoring a ton or allowing a lot of goals against, even with their top two goaltenders stuck in COVID protocol recently. Both are back and ready to go for this game though.

So, who wins out between the offensive and defensive powers? Calgary’s ability to control games has been far superior this season, so I think they force the Canucks to try to hang with them or die trying.
