It was a week of hirings in the NHL, with the Vancouver Canucks continuing to embrace a diverse approach to hockey operations by bringing in Hall of Famer Cammi Granato as assistant general manager, and the Anaheim Ducks filling their vacant general manager position with Steve Yzerman protégé Pat Verbeek.

On the other hand, there were some firings, with the Montreal Canadiens moving on from Dominique Ducharme, who in under one year on the job went from taking his team to the Stanley Cup Final to being the worst team in the league, and the Edmonton Oilers axing Dave Tippett as they continue to struggle with consistently competing. New coaches in Montreal and Edmonton face wildly different challenges, but eyes should be on both clubs for the season half of the season.

Montreal Canadiens to defeat Columbus Blue Jackets +120

In the first game of Hall of Famer Martin St. Louis’ career as a head coach in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens looked fully engaged for the first time in a very long time. Unfortunately, Cayden Primeau’s shattered confidence allowed the Capitals to build an insurmountable lead, but the Canadiens looked competitive with a much better team.

Most noticeable was the play of Cole Caufield, who scored his first goal in 18 games, and promptly scored another that was waived off on an icing review. The dynamism that had been missing from his game seemed to be back, which could be a huge boost to the Habs.

The Blue Jackets are a middling-to-bad team who handed the Canadiens their lunch a couple of weeks ago, so a more engaged team looking for a bit of revenge might give the Canadiens the edge here.

Over 6.5 total goals  in Toronto Maple Leafs vs Vancouver Canucks -105

The Maple Leafs are in a bit of a rut, relatively speaking. They’re not playing poorly, and they’re not failing to win games, but Jack Campbell has been terrible for two months now, to put it harshly. He’s posted an 89.3 per cent save percentage over his last 15 games, which is one of the worst marks in the league over that time.

That’s forced the Leafs into scoring a lot in order to win, and they’ve maintained a 9-3-2 record with Campbell in net anyway over that time, scoring 4.33 goals per game over that timeframe.

The Canucks have been much better under Bruce Boudreau, and Thatcher Demko has been great in net, but they’ve been up and down as of late as a team, and the Leafs are such a dominant offensive force, they should break through.

Andrew Mangiapane to score anytime vs New York Islanders +185

Back when the NHLers were supposed to go to the Olympics, Mangiapane was mounting a dark horse case to force his way onto Team Canada with his ridiculous goal scoring pace. He slowed down considerably around the time it started to look questionable that the Olympics were on the cards, scoring just three goals in 17 games, but he’s heating back up now with four goals and two assists in his last four games.

The 5ft10in sparkplug is one of the most exciting players to watch on the Flames, and if there’s anything we know about bread, it’s that it’s better hot. Yes, that’s a pun on his last name, and no, I’m not sorry.

Filip Forsberg to score anytime vs Winnipeg Jets +115

In the playoffs, Nashville is one of the loudest rinks in the league. Earlier this year while Colorado was struggling a bit, the Predators were getting a fair amount of attention for blowing the doors off of expectations for this season and leading the Central division. Now however, it seems like people are sleeping on the Predators a little.

For example, did you know Filip Forsberg has 10 goals in 11 games? Against a team that’s been in freefall for a long time now like the Jets, Forsberg has an excellent chance at padding his stats a little bit as the Preds cruise to a win.
