Hockey has some strange traditions. One of them is that a ‘true’ 50 goals in 50 games has to start at game one of the season, and it has to be in the team’s first 50 games. That stems from the first time it was ever done, when Maurice Richard accomplished the feat in a 50-game season with no margin for error. That remains incredibly impressive, but 50 goals in 50 games is still 50 goals in 50 games. It hasn’t been done in the NHL since Mario Lemieux did it (unofficially as well) in 1995-96, and Auston Matthews has the chance to do it tonight against the Montreal Canadiens.

Auston Matthews to score anytime vs Montreal Canadiens -200

The payout isn’t going to be huge with how much Matthews is scoring, but watching him lately you can see the determination and drive he’s playing with. He looks completely unstoppable. He has terrorized the Montreal Canadiens in the regular season throughout his career.

If Matthews doesn’t score in this one, he can score two in the following game and still have 50 in 50, but the swagger he’s been playing with throughout this stretch just doesn’t lend itself to the idea that he would miss an opportunity.

Montreal Canadiens vs Toronto Maple Leafs to go to overtime +500

Before a stunner from Paul Byron that beat Erik Kallgren with under two-and-a-half minutes left, the Canadiens and Leafs were headed for overtime in their last matchup. Jake Allen was heroic in stopping 49 shots to keep the Canadiens in a game they were thoroughly outplayed in, and the Canadiens capitalized on the few opportunities they earned.

For whatever reason, no matter how much better the Maple Leafs are, the Canadiens always seem to frustrate them. These two teams have gone into overtime so many times over the last several years, this is the last time these two meet this season, so it’s the last chance!

Elias Pettersson to score anytime vs San Jose Sharks +170

Remember early on in the season when Pettersson couldn’t score at all? Neither does he. With seven goals in his last six games, the Canucks’ franchise player is up to 25 goals on the season, close to his usual pace over his first two NHL seasons.

The Canucks have fallen out of the race to make the Western Wild Card, they just haven’t won enough down the stretch to catch the teams ahead of them, but Pettersson is setting the stage for a much better start to next year. Starting on the right foot next season could propel the Canucks into a playoff spot, and Pettersson is their most important piece.

Edmonton Oilers to defeat Colorado Avalanche +110

On the second half of a back-to-back with travel, one that required overtime to boot, the Colorado Avalanche remain the best team in the league, but they’re facing an Oilers team that is currently seeing McDavid and Draisaitl each scoring a goal per game, so just assume that’s two goals to deal with already.

The Oilers’ goaltending continues to be an issue, something a high-octane team like Colorado could exploit, but a rested team has a bit of an advantage in insulating their goalie as well.

If there was ever a perfect storm that would allow the Oilers a window of opportunity to win a game against the Avalanche, this looks like the one.
