Giants vs Eagles Preview

The New York Giants, as the sixth seed, defeated the third-seeded Minnesota Vikings in a game they dominated throughout.

Daniel Jones cleared 300 passing yards for the second time against Minnesota this season, while rushing for another 78 yards. It might just be Daniel Jones’ best game of his pro career, and he did it when it mattered the most on the biggest stage. The Giants now find themselves in the divisional round of the playoffs for the first time since their 2011 Super Bowl victory, and the Philadelphia Eagles now stand in their way of advancing once more.

Saquon Barkley only carried the football nine times in Sunday's victory over the Vikings, while Daniel Jones carried the football a career high 17 times. He was able to pick apart the Vikings secondary with ease, completing 24/35 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

The Giants' offense has improved throughout the season, even without a top-performing wide receiver. Coach Brian Daboll has provided opportunities to lesser-known players and it has yielded positive results. Third-year wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who previously worked with Daboll in Buffalo, was picked up by the Giants via waivers in November.

The former sixth-round draft pick has become a crucial part of the Giants' offense in the absence of injured Sterling Shepard. On Sunday, he set a new career high with 8 catches for 105 yards and 1 touchdown. Hodgins has made the most of his playing opportunity with the Giants, catching 5 touchdowns in his last 6 games. His performances demonstrate that despite having limited options, the Giants are competing just as fiercely as any other team and consistently surpassing expectations for the season.

Daniel Jones was on his last chance as a starting quarterback this season. Many had concluded he wasn’t up to the standard and that the Giants would likely move on via the draft if he had another poor year. With the guidance of head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Jones has completely revitalized his career. His success has made the Giants' upcoming matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend a highly anticipated event.

The Giants are executing well-disciplined football in all aspects of the game. The offensive line is showing improvement, and if Evan Neal can make the same progress as Andrew Thomas, the team will have two accomplished offensive tackles for the long term. Defensively, the return of Adoree Jackson was indeed a major factor in the Giants progression to the Divisional Round. Jackson shadowed Justin Jefferson on several occasions and kept him quiet whenever he was covering him. Justin Jefferson was unable to significantly influence the game or exploit the defense, forcing Kirk Cousins to rely on other receivers.

The Giants limited Justin Jefferson, a First-Team All-Pro, to 47 receiving yards. He had 7 receptions, but none were for significant gains or explosive plays, making it challenging for the Vikings to execute their offensive plan.

While the Giants performance against the Vikings was impressive, and certainly deserving of a spot in the Divisional Round, this road game against the Philadelphia Eagles is a step up in competition. The Vikings are of course a good team, but many had their doubts about just how good they would be in the postseason, and their defense has been giving up a wealth of yards all season.

The Eagles have one of the strongest defenses in the league, and experienced talented veterans in almost every position. This is the number one pass defense in the league. Daniel Jones simply won’t have the freedom he had against the Vikings, and the Giants will have their work cut out with an inexperienced group of wide receivers against a very experienced group of defensive backs.

Philly are allowing 180 passing yards per game on average this season. The best in the league. They traded for CJ Gardner-Johnson earlier in the season in what has turned into one of the best value trades of the season. Gardner-Johnson is tied first for interceptions this season across the league with six, despite missing the entire month of December through injury. The Eagles safety returned to the lineup for the first time since his injury in Week 18, and is good to go for the playoffs, meaning a huge boost for an already strong secondary unit.

When the two sides met earlier this season, the Eagles held Daniel Jones to 169 passing yards, and Saquon Barkley had just 28 rushing yards on nine carries. Those numbers will not be enough to see the Giants win this one.

Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense have more outlets than the Minnesota Vikings too. Simply covering off Justin Jefferson limits the Vikings and Kirk Cousins ability to drive down the field. The Eagles have three exceptional pass catchers in AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert. Even if you somehow find a way to contain all three of them at the same time, Jalen Hurts has a wealth of mobility of his own that also needs to be accounted for on every down.

The Eagles put up 48 points on the Giants earlier this year. Granted Brian Daboll and his staff have had time since then to solidify their defense, but will it be enough to halve that total? Jalen Hurts and Miles Sanders combined for 221 rushing yards against them during that game, while both AJ Brown and Devonta Smith caught touchdown passes.

I have the utmost respect for Brian Daboll, Daniel Jones and the New York Giants’ performance this season considering the players they have available. However, the significant difference in the talent of the two teams this weekend is a major obstacle for the Giants' playoff run. The Giants' success will be dependent on a flawlessly executed game plan.
