Cowboys vs 49ers Preview

The San Francisco 49ers are the odds-on favorite and have been the odds-on favorite to make and win the NFC Championship game since the playoffs started.

Led by Nick Bosa and their No.1-ranked defense in almost every statistical category, this 49ers defensive unit is a pure juggernaut. While there was growing concern when backup quarterback Brock Purdy took the reins as the team’s starter due to Jimmy Garoppolo’s season ending injury, Purdy silenced those concerns and has been just what the 49ers needed. Throwing for two or more touchdowns in every game since becoming the starter, Purdy has been close to perfect.

For the Dallas Cowboys, consistency has been the problem for them as most weeks they’ll look like one of the best teams in football and then, for a game, a quarter, or even a few critical drives, they’ll completely flip the script. Despite those inconsistencies, they still find themselves in the Divisional Round, competing for a spot in the NFC Championship game.

Cowboys vs 49ers Predictions and Picks for NFL Divisional Round

It seems like everyone is writing off this Dallas Cowboys team on Sunday and I can understand why, but the talent is there. The talent on the defensive side and the talent on the offensive side of the ball is absolutely there for the Dallas Cowboys. They displayed that on Monday night as they absolutely had their way with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Quarterback Dak Prescott was perfect, throwing for four touchdowns and no interceptions, and was a true dual-threat as he even ran one in as well. Owner Jerry Jones said that it was the best game he’s ever seen Prescott play, and he might be right.

Prescott ran the ball for more times then he did all season as he just took what the Buccaneers defense gave him. The offensive line did their job as they only allowed one sack and the offense was flowing. While Bosa and this 49ers defense is stout and they get to the quarterback a lot, ranking eighth in the NFL in sacks per game, if Prescott uses his legs and is a dual threat in this game, then this 49ers defense is going to be in for a long night.

If you look back at the 49ers’ losses this year, while bad offense was a factor in some of those games, stopping mobile quarterbacks was their Achilles heel as Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota both were able to utilize their legs and take pressure off of their offensive lines. Prescott will utilize his legs again in this game, extend plays and will take what the offense gives him. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has this Cowboys defense locked in and focused and will have another dominant performance against the 49ers offense on Sunday. The Cowboys play spoiler and advance to the NFC Championship game for the first time since 1996.

The Pick: Dallas Cowboys ML (+170)

Normally, I’d give a play on the total of the game here. But for this game, I’m sticking with the total on the Cowboys side of the ball.

The 49ers defense is loaded and is a force to reckon with, but they’ve had their fair share of games where they’ve been exposed defensively as well. The Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs back in Week 6 and 7, and then most recently in Week 17 against the Las Vegas Raiders, who put up 34 and brought the game into overtime.

The Cowboys team total comes in at a very key number at 20.5, and I absolutely love the over here. This 49ers defense, like I said, ranks first in almost every defensive category, except when it comes to defending the pass. Prescott will extend plays with his legs, which will keep this 49ers defense guessing and, as a result, will allow this Cowboys offense to continue to thrive and head back to glory in their first NFC Championship game in almost 30 years.

The Pick: Dallas Cowboys Team Total Points over 20.5 (-120)

Best NFL Player Prop Bets Divisional Round Today for Cowboys vs 49ers

Best Cowboys Player Prop Bets Today Dak Prescott

Dak Prescott threw for two or more passing touchdowns in eight of his 12 games this season, and is coming off of a four-touchdown game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense on Monday night.

This 49ers defense is stout, but their weakness is their secondary and defending the pass. In Week 17 in a must-win game for the 49ers, they made backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham look like a prime Tom Brady as he had three passing touchdowns.

Prescott exceeds his 1.5 passing touchdown total for the 10th time this year.

The Pick: Dak Prescott over 1.5 passing touchdowns (-115)

Leighton Vander Esch

Leighton Vander Esch returned back to the Cowboys lineup for the first time since Week 14 and didn’t miss a beat as he had nine total tackles and two pass deflections.

This is a guy that grew up playing eight-man football, so the room for error defensively and capitalizing on open-field tackles was crucial. Vander Esch is a man amongst boys and is just one of many talents on this Cowboys defense.

The Pick: Leighton Vander Esch over 7.5 tackles and assists (-125)
