The Cincinnati Bengals corrected a timid start to the 2022 NFL season by winning 10 of their last 11 games, including an eight-game win streak to close out the year. That streak included a win over the No. 1 seed Kansas City Chiefs and a Week 18 victory over the Baltimore Ravens who will also represent the AFC North in the postseason.

Last season, Cincinnati had a successful year but faced challenges in replicating it due to a competitive division and deficiencies in the roster. The offensive line, a major weakness, played a significant role in the Bengals falling short of winning the Lombardi trophy.

The Bengals made a bold move in the offseason by spending a significant portion of their salary cap to acquire top players such as La’El Collins, Alex Kappa, and Ted Karras, indicating their commitment to pursuing the NFL's prestigious championship trophy.

Initially, the Bengals faced a slow start to the year and the offensive line's issues had those same critics claiming they just weren’t able to compete for the second season in a row. However, Cincinnati worked to address those problems and went on to achieve a 12-4 record and secure the number three seed in the playoffs. The last time the Bengals made the playoffs, they went all the way to the Super Bowl, leading to speculation about whether they can repeat that performance.

When was the last time the Bengals made the playoffs?

The Bengals' last playoff appearance was a successful one. Cincinnati had a remarkable run in the 2021-2022 season that far surpassed the expectations of analysts around the league and oddsmakers around the world. The Bengals claimed the AFC North for the first time since 2015 with a 10-7 record that equated to more wins than the previous two seasons combined.

Joe Burrow was competing in his first full season after a promising rookie year was cut short by a gruesome knee injury. He came back better than ever and led the Bengals to the postseason as the No. 4 seed. The Bengals advanced to Super Bowl by defeating the Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans, and Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in the Conference Championship, making their first Super Bowl appearance since 1988.

The Bengals would ultimately fall short against the LA Rams and their determined defense, with superstar Aaron Donald sealing the game in the final moments with heavy pressure on Joe Burrow that resulted in an incomplete pass on fourth down.

When was the last time the Bengals won a playoff game?

The Bengals last playoff win came in a thrilling victory over the Kansas City Chiefs to advance to Super Bowl LVI.

Cincinnati went on the road to face Mahomes and the Chiefs, who had been to the Super Bowl the year before. Things were looking bleak in the first half, with the Chiefs surging to a 21-3 lead after three Patrick Mahomes passing touchdowns.

Led by Joe Burrow, the Bengals overcame this deficit in the second half, while the defense limited the Chiefs to just three points. Eventually, the team was able to secure a victory in overtime when Evan McPherson kicked a game-winning field goal.

Bengals Playoff Wins

The Bengals have a total of eight playoff wins in their history, with three of those wins coming during the 2021-2022 season. Their previous playoff victories include the four combined wins in 1981 and 1988 that led to their first two Super Bowl appearances, and a win against the Houston Oilers in the 1990 Wild Card round.

Bengals Playoff Record

The Cincinnati Bengals playoff record is 8-15. Their three wins in the 2021-22 season did help to improve the Bengals history in the playoffs, but before that their last playoff win was in 1990.

Cincinnati’s win over the Houston Oilers in the 1990 Wild Card was followed by a fifteen-year playoff drought before they finally returned in 2005. They then made the playoffs seven times in the next 10 years, but crashed out in the wildcard round each time. Zac Taylor’s 2022 team will be looking to further improve the Bengals all time Playoff Record.

Bengals Playoff Record Summary

Wild Card Round: 2-8

Divisional Round: 3-4

Conference Championship: 3-0

Super Bowl: 0-3

All-time Playoffs Record: 8-15

Bengals Playoff Scenarios ahead of the NFL Playoffs 2023

Cincinnati secured the AFC North title before their Week 18 matchup against Baltimore and will now host the Ravens for the second consecutive game.

If the Buffalo Bills win against Miami, and the Bengals beat the Ravens, they will remain the third seed with just four teams remaining in the Divisional Round. This would mean a trip to Buffalo to play the Bills on the road.

However, if the Miami Dolphins happen to pull off the most unlikely of upsets and beat the Bills, that would push the Bengals into the No. 2 seed. This would result in a home game against the winner of the Jacksonville Jaguars and LA Chargers game.

Regardless of the results, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the lowest seed in the Divisional Round, which means Cincinnati will face whichever opponent is left.

From there, the AFC Championship game will be played on a neutral site if it includes either the Bills or the Bengals against Kansas City.

How many Super Bowl appearances do the Bengals have?

The Bengals have three Super Bowl appearances. They boast a flawless record in the Conference Championship round. Each time they've made it that far, they've won and advanced to the Super Bowl. However, they are yet to climb over that final hurdle to lift the Lombardi trophy.

The Bengals lost two Super Bowl matchups in the 1980s to the San Francisco 49ers, and one in 2022 to the LA Rams.

Have the Cincinnati Bengals ever won a Super Bowl?

The Cincinnati Bengals have not won a Super Bowl yet. However, Joe Burrow and the team seem determined to become the first generation of Bengals players to bring a Super Bowl victory to the city of Cincinnati.
