The Buffalo Bills vs Cincinnati Bengals divisional playoff matchup will kick off on Sunday afternoon at Orchard Park. Both sides have had a fantastic season, but only one will advance to the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs or Jacksonville Jaguars.

As it stands the Bills vs Bengals all-time record comes out at 17-15 in favor of Buffalo. In this article we are going to discuss some of the noteworthy encounters and statistics between these two teams throughout their history against one another.

Both teams appear to have their franchise quarterback locked in for the future, with Bills fans hoping Josh Allen will be the man who finally breaks the Buffalo Bills Super Bowl curse.

Joe Burrow has already led the Bengals to the big game, and is extremely determined to take them there again, only this time to lift the Lombardi trophy.

These two quarterbacks are both young, talented players who seem set to be two of the biggest stars for years to come in the NFL. We can only hope that this is the first postseason encounter of many between these two young men and their teams.

Before the game kicks off this weekend, here are eight things you need to know about the Bengals vs Bills history.

8 Facts You Need To Know About Bengals vs Bills History

  1. The Very First Encounter

The two teams first met on the 22nd September 1968, a game the Bengals won 34-23.

That game featured quarterbacks Dan Darragh of the Buffalo Bills, and John Stoka for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Stoka played just one season with the Bengals in 1968, not exactly boasting the greatest Bengals statistics, while Darragh spent three years with Buffalo, his only three years in pro football. Neither quarterback threw a touchdown on the day.

  1. Nine Total AFC Championship Appearances

The Buffalo Bills have appeared in six total AFC Championship games, including the four-game run between 1991 and 1994. The Bills lost the other two, the first of which came against the Bengals, and the last against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.

Buffalo didn’t make it to the AFC Championship game for 27 years between 1994 and 2021, where Josh Allen would finally lead them to their sixth appearance. They were beaten 24-38 by Patrick Mahomes and company, crashing out one game short of another Super Bowl appearance.

The Bengals have been to three AFC Championship games, and unlike the Bills, they have a 100%-win record in those games. Cincinnati beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 championship game to advance to Super Bowl LVI, where they would come up short against the LA Rams.

  1. The Last Meeting Between The Buffalo Bills and The Cincinnati Bengals

The two sides were meant to meet in Week 17 for what was lined up to be a crucial game between two of the AFCs best franchises, however a terrifying injury to Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin saw the game canceled as the world turned their focus to his health and recovery.

Prior to that meeting, the last time these two teams faced each other was in September 2019, which was Zac Taylor’s first year in charge of the Cincinnati Bengals, and one year too early for Joe Burrow to have made an appearance.

While Burrow was busy destroying every college football opponent he faced and going on to win the College Football National Championship with LSU, Zac Taylor and Sean McDermott went head-to-head for the first time in their young coaching careers.

Veteran Frank Gore punched in the game winning touchdown with less than two minutes on the clock to give the Bills a 21-17 victory in a tight game.

  1. The Quarterbacks Relationship

Joe Burrow and Josh Allen have never faced each other on the field. However, it’s been well documented that they have the utmost respect for each-others game and have shared a quarterback coach.

The two quarterbacks have both spent time training with Jordan Palmer, who is the brother of Carson Palmer and the founder of a program called QB Summit.

Palmer's program is a specialist program designed to help quarterbacks identify defensive play calls, make quick decisions and ultimately become better signal callers.

Players such as Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and Sam Darnold have all also spent time with Palmer, who is now the director of quarterback development for the XFL.

  1. The Playoff Record Between The Bengals and The Bills

The Cincinnati Bengals are 2-0 against the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs. They met twice in the 80s, the first of which was Ken Anderson’s MVP season as the quarterback of the Bengals.

That year, Anderson bounced back from a horrible 1980 campaign which saw him put up the worst numbers of his career so far. In 1981, he rebounded to win the league MVP as well as the NFL comeback player of the year award.

The Bengals had gone 12-4 and landed the #1 seed which meant they would go on to face the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round. They had already beaten Buffalo in September and would beat them a second time to advance to the AFC Championship. Unfortunately they get knocked out by Dan Fouts and the San Diego Chargers in the game now known as the freezer bowl.

The Bengals and the Bills have not met since, until the 2022 season AFC divisional round.

  1. Pro Bowl Quarterbacks Meet Again

The second playoff meeting between these two franchises came in the 1988 season, and this time it was Boomer Esiason of the Bengals against Jim Kelly of the Bills.

Both quarterbacks had good years that season, with Boomer Esiason eventually being named the MVP of the league while earning his first and only All Pro Honors and his second of four Pro Bowl selections.

Jim Kelly had rescued his career the year before in 1987, and that momentum propelled the rest of his career until the mid-90s, including a second Pro Bowl appearance in the 1988 campaign. The two would meet in the AFC Championship game in January 1989.

It was Boomer who came out on top against Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and co, although neither quarterback played particularly well, each throwing one touchdown to multiple interceptions. The Bengals beat the Bills 21-10 to advance to Super Bowl XXIII, where they would lose to Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers.

The 2022 divisional round playoff game between Josh Allen and Joe Burrow will see these two sides both field pro bowl quarterbacks for the second time in three playoff battles. Joe Burrow received his first Pro Bowl honors in 2022, while Josh Allen was voted in a second time, adding to his 2020 selection.

  1. The Bills Winning Streak and The Overall Head To Head Record

Following the 1989 playoff game between these two teams, the Bills went on a ten-game winning streak against Cincinnati, starting on the 26th November 1989, and lasting over twenty years. The Bengals wouldn’t beat the Buffalo Bills again until the 2nd October 2011.

The Buffalo Bills became one of the NFLs biggest dynasties in the 1990s, making it to four straight Super Bowls, the longest streak of consecutive appearances in NFL history. While they famously lost all four of those games, Buffalo were still one of the teams to beat, winning the AFC Championship in each of those four seasons. That dynasty run included those ten straight beatdowns over the Cincinnati Bengals, who had to wait 22 years for another win against Buffalo.

The Bengals longest winning streak against Buffalo is five games, which coincidentally finished with the aforementioned 1989 playoff game. The Bengals won five straight, and then the Bills won the next ten, helping to give them the edge in the overall head-to-head between the two teams.

The overall record in the Bengals-Bills rivalry stands at 17-15 in favor of the Bills. The Bills could pull one game further away in the upcoming playoff clash or allow the Bengals to draw one game closer to leveling the history books.

  1. A clash of unbeaten streaks

After a shaky start to the 2022 season, the Cincinnati Bengals rounded out the year by winning eight straight regular season games. The victory in the wildcard round over the Baltimore Ravens made it nine in a row, but the tenth win over the Buffalo Bills would be the most important of them all, sending Joe Burrow and the Bengals into the AFC Championship game for the second season in a row.

The Bengals aren’t the only team on a hot streak right now. The Buffalo Bills battled through adversity in the second half of the season with quarterback Josh Allen nursing an injury in his throwing elbow. He didn't sit any games out but looked a little shaky at times. That never phased the Bills, and they won seven games in a row to end the regular season.

Buffalo then snuck past the Miami Dolphins in the wildcard round to bring their unbeaten run to eight games, making these two teams two of the most in form franchises in the league. One of them will see their unbeaten streak broken as the two sides meet in Buffalo, where either Joe Burrows Bengals or Josh Allens Bills will advance to the AFC Championship game against either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Jacksonville Jaguars.
