NFC Championship Game Preview

The stage is set for the Eagles and the 49ers in the NFC Conference Championship game this coming Sunday. The 2017 season NFC Champions return for the first time since that Super Bowl season, while the Niners make another appearance after winning the NFC title the following season in 2019.

Philadelphia enters this matchup feeling more prepared than they did in their last appearance. If they were able to win it all before, will they be stopped this time around?

First, they have a healthy starting quarterback (almost) and a game changer at that. In 2017, Carson Wentz had led the team during the regular season but was injured before the playoffs. This time, barring the shoulder sprain, their star man on offense will be fit and healthy, and he looked totally unimpaired by the shoulder against the Giants.

The Eagles breezed past the Giants in the divisional round, and Jalen Hurts didn’t even need to do much to help the Eagles score 38 points. He connected on just 16 completions, two of which were touchdowns to DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert. He then ran the ball nine times for 34 yards including the six-yard touchdown run.

Philadelphia relied heavily on their running backs in this game, with Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott receiving a total of 35 carries, for a combined 44 rushes, compared to Jalen Hurts' 24 passing attempts.

AJ Brown had a quiet game with three catches for 22 yards, but again, he didn’t need to have a big game or give the 49ers anything to talk about because the Eagles defense handled the Giants and kept them to just seven points.

As I said last week, the Eagles secondary is suffocating. Darius Slay has been at the top of the game for almost his entire career. They then signed former Pro Bowler James Bradberry, brought in CJ Gardner Johnson from the New Orleans Saints, and formed one of the most dominant secondaries in the NFL.

The Eagles' defense is strong in all aspects. They are able to effectively stop the run and their experienced defensive line can make a big impact in close games.

Both defenses can frustrate the run game, but the Eagles most definitely have the edge in pass defense situations. The 49ers linebackers are phenomenal, but their corners and safeties are not of the same level as Philly. They instead depend on the front seven to shutdown anything in the trenches and apply pressure. Nick Bosa is a wrecking machine capable of turning a game by himself and he’s far from your only concern when it comes to that 49ers front.

San Francisco has found a winning formula in a steady quarterback who limits turnovers and patiently drives the team down the field. Brock Purdy deserves a ton of credit for the work he put in to prepare for this moment. He is poised, patient, never panics and trusts his instincts. You can see him patiently work through his progressions to find the open man, which is of course made easier behind a very strong offensive line.

The Dallas Cowboys possesses some of the most athletic and powerful pass rush talent in the league, but I observed Trent Williams easily handling Micah Parsons multiple times. Even against the Cowboys' talented defensive line, the Niners only allowed two sacks.

There are a few factors to consider for the NFC Championship game.

First up. Can the Niners contain Jalen Hurts as a runner? Read option plays to the outside could be a major threat to the Niners who plug those inside runs so well. Jalen Hurts has the ability to hurt you on the ground, and he only has to pop a couple of those for a big gain to change the course of the game.

Second, is Brock Purdy going to be able to drive his way down the field against these elite Eagles defensive backs? The matchup of safeties against George Kittle will be fascinating, and the Eagles are a team who will immediately punish you if you throw a bad ball or make a mistake.

Are they going to be able to get Christian McCaffrey into the game more than they did against the Cowboys? McCaffrey had 16 touches, 10 runs and six catches for a total of 57 yards and a touchdown. While it wasn’t his biggest game, Elijah Mitchell ended up with the lion's share of the carries, including the all-important first down that should have put the game away had he stayed inbounds.

Both teams have impressive rosters, they are well-prepared for this stage. They have confidence in their offenses and multiple ways to attack a defense. Each team has multiple receiving options and depth in the running back position, as well as many impactful players on defense, which makes for an exciting NFC Championship game on Sunday.

49ers vs Eagles Predictions and Picks for NFC Conference Championship Game

Whoever I pick here means choosing a great football team to lose. The spread is set at 2.5 in the favor of the Eagles, predicting a close game. This is a tough call, but I find myself siding with the Eagles on their home field.

Brock Purdy has done a magnificent job this season, but the Eagles secondary can disrupt the scheme of the Niners and cause him to have to think a little more. He has of course shown that he can do that and doesn’t panic if his first read isn’t open. That said, in a close game, a couple of wayward balls resulting in a punt or potentially a turnover could swing the game.

The Eagles aren’t going to have it easy against the Niners defense either. But this is me believing Jalen Hurts is more of a playmaker than Brock Purdy. Both will need to call on their weapons for some big plays, but the Eagles pass catchers against the Niners secondary gives me a little more than the Niners pass catchers against the Philly secondary.

The Pick: Philadelphia Eagles -2.5 (-120)

Both teams have strong defenses that rank in the top eight in points allowed per game this season, with the Niners being the best with an average of 16.3 points allowed per game. Both defenses are healthy, with key players returning for the playoffs, which could make it difficult for either team to score.

The line for this game might be a bit high considering the teams and situation. It's possible that one big quarter could change the game, but I am going with my gut and taking the under.

The Pick: San Francisco 49ers vs Philadelphia Eagles Under 45.5 Points (-110)
