You are hereby excused if you are having trouble making any kind of sense out of the NBA this week. Seems like half of the league is out due to COVID protocols, and the other half cannot decide whether it will be Jekyll or Hyde on any given night.

And then we have Steph Curry, who is our beacon of normalcy. He will be at Madison Square Garden tonight to play the New York Knicks and to break Ray Allen’s record for most career 3-pointers, and unless he goes stone cold from the field he will get the job done at an arena where he usually thrives.

Reggie Miller will be in the house to call the game for TNT, as it is the first half of a doubleheader that will be followed by the hard-to-figure Phoenix Suns taking on the impossible-to-figure Portland Trail Blazers.

And if you think this particular Tuesday is weird, just wait until Wednesday arrives and any player who signed a contract in the offseason becomes trade eligible. Yes, we might actually get to see a Ben Simmons trade.

But back to tonight: The Warriors are coming off a 102-100 victory over the Pacers in Indianapolis last night, and the team had to remain in Indiana because of airplane problems. But they will make it to New York at some point today, and Curry needs only two 3s to break the record. Just to lighten the mood and prove that humor is still alive during the worldwide pandemic, Kerr pulled a fast one on everyone last night by saying he would rest Curry.

That one went over like a lead balloon until people realized it was a joke, but in this particular NBA season it was not immediately clear that he was joshing folks. Joel Embiid sat out last night for Philadelphia, Luka Doncic did the same for Dallas, Paul George was sidelined for the Clippers, and the NBA pulled a page from last season’s playbook and postponed the Chicago Bulls’ next two games because of a COVID outbreak on the team. Even the Toronto Raptors were impacted, as their broadcast team had to stay home after possibly coming into contact with a COVID-infected person.

Chaos, folks. But making sense out of chaos is what we are all about here, so we will have at it again in the hopes that you will take this advice, act upon it and begin writing your new book: “Where I took My Yacht Over The Holidays.”

The Warriors are favored by five (up from 3.5 early this morning) over a Knicks team that started rookie Quentin Grimes in the backcourt Sunday as Kemba Walker never took his warmups off. He has fallen off the face of the earth as far as coach Tom Thibodeau is concerned, and it would not be surprising to see him moved once he becomes trade eligible.

New York is also dealing with a prolonged slump from Julius Randle, who was an All-Star last season but has failed to reach 20 points in his last four games. The Knicks are 12th in the East with losses in six of their last seven games, while Golden State has the NBA’s best record at 22-5 with Curry now listed as just +130 to be MVP.

In the nightcap, the Suns will be playing the second night of a back-to-back after they lost to the Clippers by 16. They have only five defeats, but those margins were 16, 22, 3, 29 and 12. The 29-point loss came against Portland in the third game of the season when both teams were at full strength and Neil Olshey was still in charge in Oregon’s anarchist capital.

Tonight, C.J. McCollum is out while recovering from a collapsed lung, and Phoenix is without Devin Booker, who has been out two weeks and counting with a bum hamstring. The Suns are favored by 1.5 points (down from three earlier today) on the road.

In the night’s only other game, the Brooklyn Nets are at home favored by five (down from 8.5 earlier today) against Toronto amid a report in The Athletic that the Nets have become optimistic that Kyrie Irving will be rejoining the team sooner rather than later. Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant is coming off a 51-point game but is questionable with right ankle soreness, and James Harden should be playing after resting Sunday vs. Detroit. The Nets learned early today that four players, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Bembry, Jevon Carter and James Johnson have joined teammate Paul Millsap in COVID protocols and will not play. More on that game below.

The over/under on Curry’s made 3-pointers is 5.5, and he has a history of playing great at MSG. He shot 5-for-14 Monday and 3-for-15 Saturday, and for the month he is 27-for-72 from distance. He has had only one game with fewer than two 3-pointers this season, so barring an injury or a positive COVID test or a day-long flight delay, he is breaking the record tonight. Last season, Curry made seven 3s at the Garden, and in 2013-14 he went 11-for-13 and had a triple-double. He loves the stage, but the recent slump screams “stay away” from the 5.5 line. A better Warriors wager is Andrew Wiggins to bounce back from his 0-for-3 night from distance in Indiana and go over 1.5 3-pointers made, along with Draymond Green (0-for-5 in his last five games) to go under 0.5 3s.

On the Knicks’ end, Julius Randle has been slumping without a 20-point game in his last four as he has shot 17-for-48. His production has been cratering for more than a month, and his point total over/under of 21.5 seems too high. Likewise with Evan Fournier, who has made only one 3-pointer in three of four games and has an over/under on 3s of 2.5. That “under” seems safe, as does his point total over/under of 12.5, especially with rookie Quentin Grimes now the flavor of the week in Tom Thibodeau’s ever-changing rotation. Fournier has been in single digits in four straight games. Fournier also has just one blocked shot in all of November and December, so go under on his 0.5 blocks total.

The nightcap is a challenging wager, unless you take a deep dive into player props as we have been doing with quite a bit of success this season. Norman Powell of the Blazers has only one block in his last 14 games, so we like the “under” 0.5 blocks. Damian Lillard jacked up 14 3s last game and made only three, and also grabbed 11 rebounds. We like him to go “over” 4.5 rebounds tonight, and go with the “over” on his 3-point total of 2.5 only if you are feeling lucky. He does not have his usual shooting touch this season. On the Phoenix side, take the “under” on Landry Shamet’s blocks. The line is 0.5, and he has not had one in the past 10 games.

In the Toronto-Brooklyn game, let’s start with Harden, whose scoring average has dropped to 20.8 as he is attempting fewer than 15 shots per game. To put that in perspective, he averaged 24.5 shots per game in 2018-19 when he averaged 36.1 points per game for the Rockets. He has only three 30-point games this season, which makes him overdue and a good play to hit the “over” on his point total line of 21.5, especially with Durant questionable. We also like Harden to finish shy of his blocked shots over-under of 0.5. And with Durant coming off his best game of the season, we like him to go over 42.5 on his points, rebounds and assists combined – if he plays. On Sunday, those numbers added up to 67.

Good luck tonight, and maybe made a side bet with one of your buddies on who will score more points in New York: Durant in Brooklyn, or Curry in Manhattan. That one could go either way.
